Heidi Nelson Cruz's San Luis Obispo roots shaped her career, marriage to Tea Party darling
The Tribune News ^ | November 16, 2013 | PATRICK S. PEMBERTON

Sen. Ted Cruz’s wife grew from baking bread in SLO to breaking bread with the Washington elite

Presidential politics first captured Heidi Nelson Cruz’s attention in the 1980s, when the 12-year-old read a Time magazine piece about the Ronald Reagan-Walter Mondale race while working at her San Luis Obispo bread stand.

She would later become a Capitol Hill intern, a policy aide on the George W. Bush campaign and economic director for the Western Hemisphere with the National Security Council. But while government and politics might have been her calling at one time, nothing in her background could have prepared her for this summer, when her husband, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, helped force a shutdown of the federal government.

“We were blessed to go to good schools and have careers that Ted and I enjoyed,” said Cruz, 41. “But we were in no way well known.”

That all changed, of course, when the newly elected Republican senator from Texas waged a campaign — culminating with a 21-hour speech on the Senate floor — to defund President Barack Obama’s health care program. His ardent stance brought nightly media attention, praise from supporters on the right and harsh criticism from the left.

While he became a darling of the Tea Party — fueling talk of a possible presidential run in 2016 — critics called him “a fraud,” “self-aggrandizing” and “nutty.”

Those words might have bothered some, Heidi Cruz said, but not her husband.

“He has an incredible heart, but he’s not the kind of person that’s trying to do what everybody wants him to do,” she said. “He’s trying to do what he thinks is right, and he has an innate ability to really not worry about things beyond his control.”

The senator’s ability to deflect criticisms — including some from his own party — has affected her own reactions, she said.

Ted is representing his Texan constituents. Texans want to sell their oil, gas, industrial products, agricultural products, beef etc.

There’s a huge glut of crude oil in the USA and Ted would see that the excess is allowed to be exported. Obama and the democrats won’t allow it because it empowers conservative industries.

Countries in the Pacific and in Europe are begging for natural gas shipped to them as LNG. The USA has an ENORMOUS surplus of NG that is being burned/flared (wasted) because Obama won’t expedite granting the export licenses for LNG.

Adding up all the jobs in Texas alone that are dependent on international trade tops 3 million and the examples stated above will add millions more jobs.

That’s where Ted Cruz is coming from.

The problem is the current trade agreements (not TPA) are secret and the media is having a field day genning up conspiracy and overreaction.

But Ted is sticking to his principles. He’s losing on the TPA issue which is what he needs to resuscitate the US economy when he’s President but he is WINNING hands over fist at the grassroots town halls. People are drawn to this man because he speaks the truth and points to his track record to prove it.

Here’s Ted on how people should treat politicians in these days (time 1:12:40)

Lots of anti-Cruz posters are shrieking that Heidi is in league with the New World Order, the Bilderbergs and the Anti-Christ.

That's one truth and two straw men. By definition, being a managing director for Goldman Sachs and working for Morgan is being in league with the New World Order. You may think there's nothing wrong with that. It is true however. Is that what you would call a shriek.

Considering how often conservatives have been screwed over by corporatists, we should at least evaluated if Mrs. Cruz working for Goldman Sachs contributed to Ted’s vote for TPA. This deserves an explanation, not name-calling. So far Cruz’s explanations have been terrible.

i knew one of you light in the IQ Cruzbots would take the bait and avoid bringing up the fact that she is CFR. I'm sure she did a great job serving on the task force that wrote "Building a North American Community," a report from CFR on relations between the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Look. What politician is not a hypocrite. Ted called the CFR a "pit of vipers." I know in his guise of being an outsider that he has to say that kind of thing. I forgive him. You Cruzoids should at least own it.

Not the information, which is valid, but the sarcasm from Cruz supporters. FWIW, Ron Paul’s supporters made that mistake when he ran for the nomination, and it turned off a lot of potential supporters.

Daft, That defines that old thread you started in 2013 that’s still floating around today. Takes one to know all of us, I guess.

So you decided not to argue the conspiracy drivel about Heidi Cruz and instead try to divert to a 2013 thread.

I think you’re done with any chance of defending your conspiracy nonsense.

You made the daft attack, coward. As soon as I found out the lovely Heidi was Wall Street, I knew something like TPA was only a matter of time. Took a year or so but it happened. I'll not be quiet when generalized accusations of "shrieking" and "daft" keep being thrown around by poor sods caught in the throes of cult of personality.

This bruhaha is not about free trade but the fact that this bill would open the door to unlimited immigration and the erasure of our borders, free trade is the beard for the New World Order.

I guess according to you that should also apply to the other 33,000+ employees of Goldman and to the 100,000+ Wall Streeters.

You really need to get out more often. Really, would do you some good.

Ted Cruz put the kabosh on any trade bill backdoor immigration provision by filing S.Amdt 1384 to S.Amdt 1221 to the TPA.

Obama can try and violate immigration laws if he has a chance to negotiate a trade bill using TPA but he will be stopped by amending the federal injunctive order presently in force.

You do know that TPA was in existence since FDR and was renewed consistently until Harry Reid killed it for GW Bush?

You do know that Obama would only have effectively 9 months to negotiate a trade bill when it takes at least 18 months to finalize (confirmed by Phyllis Shlafly this morning) and he is banking on Hillary Clinton continuing with the leftist agenda negotiating who in turn is banking on millions of illegals getting to the poll to vote democrat?

You do know that Senator Sessions voted for the Iran bill which is truly in the domain of ‘treaty’ and thereby gave up treaty power of the US Senate in doing so? (I like and admire Senator Jeff but he is heeding the call of his constituents and they are not on mark in his current stance on trade.)

And you do know that there is a glut of crude oil in the USA in addition to an ENORMOUS surplus of NG that is burned/flared/wasted while S. Korea and Europe are begging for the USA to ship it to them as LNG and that Obama/democrats will not allow these and so many other things to be exported because it empowers conservative industries?

Admittedly there are many sides to this debate but reading through your posts I have found NOTHING of value or substance that adds to the discussion.

I am not implying that Sessions position is anti Free Trade. He explains right in his May 22 release that the Obama administration is not being forthcoming about the ultimate TPP trade agreement even in answering his questions and he therefore is not supporting the entire process by voting against the process TPA.

Cruz is seeing the same lack of transparency so he takes the opportunity of sticking amendment language in the TPA process that will confine Obama and of course has to agree with party leadership that if they insert his language he will support the TPA.

Is one a fraud or are they both working to confine and restrain Obama? I think the latter.
