Putting aside the issue of whether or not this particular takedown was “excessive force” or not, to what standard of accountability should we hold these teenagers and their parents?

Any teen or parent violating the law should have been arrested. Not shot. Not abused. Arrested.

Do we no longer expect people to obey the lawful orders of the police to disperse? Do we excuse any incivility, any overt hostility and disrespect of authority? Is it now acceptable to resist arrest, or to attempt to interfere with the arrest of another person?

Is it acceptable for police to abuse their authority and assault teen girls and draw their weapons on unarmed youths? Nobody is excusing the actions of the teens. But we expect our police to operate within the guidelines of the law, to follow procedures, not to shoot unarmed suspects or beat up teens. If they can't do their job without turning into the kind of thug you're complaining about then maybe they shouldn't be police officers.

And what are we to make of the two men who moved aggressively toward the officer as he was handcuffing the girl? Is that now acceptable behavior?

Is drawing his weapon on two unarmed men who were not a threat to him acceptable behavior? Regardless of the circumstances you want people to show blind obedience and complete subservience to the police. No questions. Nobody is innocent. Police are always right. Why should that be the case?

if a cop loses his cool, when surrounded by aggressive and abusive people, knowing how many cops have been shot down lately, I guess I can give him a pass....

the neighbors ought to make sure this never ever happens again.

There's a very good, and rather long, explanation of the legalities you question here.

the short version:

Unlawful acts by the Casebolt?
None

Unlawful acts by the various members of the crowd?
Refusal to comply with lawful police orders, by the whole non-compliant mob.
Resisting, by Dajerria Bectom
Simple assault, by Bectom’s friend who encroached on Casebolt subduing Bectom
Aggravated assault, by each of the males who rushed at the officer while he was subduing Bectom

I'm still curious though. If someone decides to resist arrest, it used to be (well, still is) the case that the police are authorized to use force to overcome that resistance. It would seem that there are some new rules being applied here -- perhaps force should no longer be allowed if the officer is male and the offender female? Or perhaps if the offender is wearing a bikini, force is no longer to be allowed. Of course, that would mean that quite a few people who might need to be arrested get a free pass, but maybe that's ok.

Or maybe it's the particular use of force that's the problem, and more aesthetically appealing force options need to be developed.

the STOOPID people got Toon elected and the STOOPID people got Frankin elected as well as the stinking arse bammy...

it includes some freepers....

the people that voted for Perot are to blame for this as well as the people that voted for the stinkin "constitutional" party and got Franken elected...as well as Ventura....and of course how many people including freepers got bammy elected twice....even the second time around we had freepers refusing to throw the charlatan out of office...

sure the media feeds the sheeple crap, but its up to the people whether to eat it or not...and sadly, so many sheeple, and freepers, eat it up with gusto, every single time....every single time...

From the few minutes of video you're already judging good cop-bad cop.

But you may have been there and know more than everyone else?

And so I repeat-
Poor misunderstood innocent teens...

If you are part of a team that aggressively rushes a cop and you put your hand behind your back as you do so, then that cop has a God-given right to draw his weapon and demand you retreat. It is insane to call that “abuse” by the cop.

As the officer arrived, many teens started running through our neighborhood. Many of the teens were being very aggressive and yelling at the officers as more arrived...and where are the cellphone videos of these apparent outrages? - surely some local TV station would appreciate such footage....

I've been thinking about it. Blaming one policeman who felt that the situation was getting way out of control is giving Al Sharpton and his agenda exactly what they need. That would be an opening for their fake, staged outrage.

The outrage should be focused on why that mob of children was there, disrupting the normal flow of events in a community environment. Nobody was injured. The parents of that girl should be THANKING the police and demanding a lot of explaining from the young lady.

That's the way civilized people behave. They respect police, and are thankful when law and order is maintained.

The man threw his hat down, too. Other police ran off after him after the gun was drawn.

Nobody is defending the kids who were behaving badly. They were disruptive and unruly and the neighbors were justified in calling the police. But if we are to criticize the teens for inappropriate behavior then why should we give the cop in question a free pass for inappropriate behavior?

Such drama. The only thing harmed in the incident was the brat’s sense of entitlement.

Cop draws on man.

At this point, the man's left hand, which arguably may have been reaching for a weapon in the immediately preceding slide, is clearly visible and weapon free.

Guy runs

In the video, the guy runs because the cop starts chasing him with his gun drawn even though the threat appears to have dissipated. As the cop starts to give chase with his weapon drawn (perhaps looking for a clean shot to the unarmed guy's back), two other cops show up and exercise resistant over the cop who had drawn his weapon.

That female teen seems no worse for wear....other than getting a lesson of what happens when you are a nasty sassy mouthy young lady creating grief for a cop when she should have walked away! I saw the video and saw no real abuse, just standard restrainingt style techniques. Two big teenagers rushing at him, yeah the gun comes and should come out! The tsk, tsking white news pundits, cop haters and progressive hand wringers, bemoaning the incident....they might as well go ahead and stretch their necks out for ISIS. They have no common sense if they think the cop was that out of control!
