Yeah, but here’s the thing: People shouldn’t have to give up their rights just because they go on TV or just because other people don’t like them. What do you think will happen going forward? If there’s another family in this situation, do you think they’ll be eager to rush to the police to tell their story? I don’t.
There’s a second consideration too... we now have rabid “protective service agencies” that can end up harming children and families worse than if the problem was dealt with in place.
Back when the law cared mainly about penalties for wrongdoers this wasn’t an issue. Now the law has tried to be all to everyone.
The Duggars came first and they didn’t “rush” to the police or get therapy for their daughters or protect the daughters from repeat offenses. I don’t think this notoriety is having a chilling effect on parents reporting incestious assualt - that ship has sailed.
I don’t think people should have special rights just because they go on TV and their show is popular.
I don’t know what rights you were referring to, but opening your very large family up to hundreds of hours of TV reality show filming seems to be a pretty statement of “we are an open book” so when that book gets read they really don’t have the fall back of “we want our privacy.” Intact it could be argued the Duggars are paid to be “public” entities.
