L.A. labor leaders seek minimum wage exemption for firms with union workers

Labor leaders, who were among the strongest supporters of the citywide minimum wage increase approved last week by the Los Angeles City Council, are advocating last-minute changes to the law that could create an exemption for companies with unionized workforces.

The push to include an exception to the mandated wage increase for companies that let their employees collectively bargain was the latest unexpected detour as the city nears approval of its landmark legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020.

For much of the past eight months, labor activists have argued against special considerations for business owners, such as restaurateurs, who said they would have trouble complying with the mandated pay increase.

But Rusty Hicks, who heads the county Federation of Labor and helps lead the Raise the Wage coalition, said Tuesday night that companies with workers represented by unions should have leeway to negotiate a wage below that mandated by the law.

Just like with Obamacare, unions now want an exemption from the $15 per hour minimum wage standard they have been demanding.

LMAO.

Only the leadership of a Los Angeles labor union would be dumb enough to push for conditions where a union worker gets paid less than the minimum wage ... and can get himself an instant raise just by quitting the 'effing union.

Unfortunately, the LIVs don’t see the hypocrisy and cronyism though. They’re getting $15/hr, and they can finally buy those new LeBron James NBA Finals jerseys

So when will the average idiot on the street figure out these scams? They keep falling for them.

These idiots just don’t get it. Everything will go up in price. Landlords will raise the rent because the renters now make more money. McDonald’s will raise the price of hamburgers. And those working at McDonalds will no longer get free burgers. They’ll have to pay for them with that extra pay they’re now getting. Everything in Los Angeles will go up. After a while Los Angeles will go belly up.

“companies with workers represented by unions should have leeway to negotiate a wage below that mandated by the law.”

People with blue eyes should never have to pay for parking.

Outrageous, nauseating, and disgusting. Like these creeps are somehow “better” than the average struggling competitive business owner.

Yea, but most are not. The best thing they have, when they
actually have it, is their apprenticeship programs. They
are great for training skilled workers. The problem I find in union electricians is the lack of experience. I’ve seen
8 year journeyman who couldn’t wire a house or run conduit
but was great at changing ballasts and breakers.

I will tell you why. With the demise of trade schools in this country there are a lot of Unions picking up the slack.

My future son in law got into the boiler makers a few months back. We have a severe shortage of welders in this country and the boiler makers union has stepped up to train as many welders as possible. My son in law is already out working and making good money as an apprentice.

The training is free. While taking the OSHA class they fed the students everyday. They had menus from all the local restaurants so you could order whatever you wanted. During the process of getting their certifications all the materials were provided and the Union paid you $20 dollars a day. The instructors were all very experienced guys and very welcoming. It is a brotherhood.

And then they charge 5.00 - 15.00 per hour out of every penny in wages he gets for the next 30 years......

BB, apparently some around here don’t think there are Very Red Republican Union members.
I was able to retire early with zero COLA pension. My union of which I’m still a member and pay about $20 month negotiated a $900 bonus in my pension for this year and next year plus my $20/month dues gives me a $7500 death benefit. Just because I’m even still a union member doesn’t mean I ever vote Democrat. I haven’t ever voted Democrat even as an absentee ballot while in the military.
From rain soaked East Texas, Cruz or Lose. Please Ricky don’t run and do the right thing and come out an endorse Ted Cruz.
