I will tell you why. With the demise of trade schools in this country there are a lot of Unions picking up the slack.

My future son in law got into the boiler makers a few months back. We have a severe shortage of welders in this country and the boiler makers union has stepped up to train as many welders as possible. My son in law is already out working and making good money as an apprentice.

The training is free. While taking the OSHA class they fed the students everyday. They had menus from all the local restaurants so you could order whatever you wanted. During the process of getting their certifications all the materials were provided and the Union paid you $20 dollars a day. The instructors were all very experienced guys and very welcoming. It is a brotherhood.

BB, apparently some around here don’t think there are Very Red Republican Union members.
I was able to retire early with zero COLA pension. My union of which I’m still a member and pay about $20 month negotiated a $900 bonus in my pension for this year and next year plus my $20/month dues gives me a $7500 death benefit. Just because I’m even still a union member doesn’t mean I ever vote Democrat. I haven’t ever voted Democrat even as an absentee ballot while in the military.
From rain soaked East Texas, Cruz or Lose. Please Ricky don’t run and do the right thing and come out an endorse Ted Cruz.

I'm still kicking myself for not taking the welding course at any of a number of trade schools, Jr. colleges, and even state programs after I retired. Their graduates are generally well employed and have had quality work hammered into their heads before going on the job.
(Not just ascribed to them as a "union made" mantra.)

Of course, they had to pay their way, didn't get charged dues, didn't get "free" gourmet meals paid for by mandatory dues, and they didn't have to have a relative to sponsor them into an exclusionary thugocracy.

I've been associated with unions in service industries (laundry), government (DOD, NASA), manufacturing (aerospace), and socially (family, police and longshoremen); and there is not a whit of merit in your defense.
