WASHINGTON (CNN) Defense Secretary Ash Carter, in his first comments since the key town of Ramadi fell to ISIS, blamed the weak state of Iraq's military as one major reason for the city's fall, in an exclusive interview on CNN's "State of the Union" aired Sunday.
"What apparently happened was that the Iraqi forces just showed no will to fight," Carter told CNN's Barbara Starr. "They were not outnumbered. In fact, they vastly outnumbered the opposing force, and yet they failed to fight, they withdrew from the site, and that says to me, and I think to most of us, that we have an issue with the will of the Iraqis to fight ISIL and defend themselves."
Carter's remarks are the strongest yet from any Obama administration official speaking on the record since the last week's events when Ramadi fell. The U.S. has sped up the shipment of some arms to help boost Iraqi forces as ISIS has recently taken more territory, but the U.S. defense chief said Iraq's military needs to step up.

I “hear” that the soldiers had not been paid in months, and even had to buy their own bullets. When they ran out - they threw down their weapons and left. Any one else hearing this?
I knew the Iraqi soldiers were spineless turds, but what surprises me is the fact that this guy Carter would actually say what he has said.
Most Merciless Leader His Highness Obama-ram-lama-ding-dong will be not be pleased.
One of his sycophants has the temerity to go against what he, hisself, the oNe, has decreed.
It sure seems that way. Particularly since the ISIS guys had a parade a few days later and nobody bothered to attack it from the air. Certainly US satellite and air based surveillance can detect a parade forming. And destroying the victory parade would have instantly reversed the propaganda value of taking the town.
It is also hard to believe nobody wanted to fight, but many people got executed after the city fell. Does anybody believe they were just too lazy to fight, knowing the fate that awaited them?
And if ISIS ever encounters a modern national Army, they will lose quickly and decisively.
For 10 years or however long we have been “training” the Iraqis, I have wondered: WHY we can take a 17-18 year old American boy and make him a Marine in 12-16 weeks but we can “train” these Iraqi men for literally years and they turn tail and run at the first sign of combat????
This from the guy who named a faggot as his Chief of Staff.
The Iraqis are just there for the free weapons and cash.
The minute it hits the fan they run for the hills, they know they cant depend on any real support from the evil faggots and criminals running the US government.
Its a scam.
Hey Ash, have any of your high-powered planners suggested that perhaps the Iraqis did not consider Ramadi as important as you do?
I wouldn’t be surprised that it’d be a staged weapons dump.
“Who are you referring to, the Iraqi soldiers, or our government?”
Iraqis.
“WHY we can take a 17-18 year old American boy and make him a Marine in 12-16 weeks but we can train these Iraqi men for literally years and they turn tail and run at the first sign of combat????”
I’ll say it.. and I don’t give two sh*ts whether anyone thinks it’s “racist”... muslim arabs are a low grade of creature.
Ash Carter could not tell you what an infantry squad is supposed to do. This Harvard prof was born in 54 and while he is educated he has never done anything except work for the Gov and universities.
great...they don’t want to fight so lets send them more arms that ISIS will capture.
That's exactly right. If they get their collective butts handed to them enough they know we'll step in and save the day...so why lay it all on the line now?
Arabs only fight hard when they are promised 9-year-old sex slaves as winner trophies. Something Mohammed understood well.
He needs to check with Maria at the State Department
Somehow you got to say most of those rifles were purchased and given to them by US.
There were pictures a couple months ago showing over a hundred shipping containers reportedly full of arms and ammunition. And they were not being guarded.
All the weapons we can donate won't be worth anything if the Iraqi security forces lack the will to fight.
I fear that Iraq may now be hopelessly broken.
We can't even resort to throwing 2 or 3 of our own combat divisions into that mess. Besides being political poison here, the troops might get attacked by the Shiite militias in thrall to Iran. And I have even begun to fear that we simply don't have enough combat ready brigades available to create and sustain a corps-sized expeditionary force.
I just want to dope-slap every Liberal who said that Obama would better our relations with the Arab world.
