Sen. Cruz: Trade Promotion Authority Creates a Path for Prosperity

We must engage the global economy to ignite growth and opportunity at home

May 22, 2015 | 202-228-7561

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), today released the following statement regarding legislation to establish trade promotion authority:

"The American middle class is getting crushed by the Obama economy," said Sen. Cruz. "Middle class incomes are stagnating, and the labor force participation rate has not been this low since the Carter Administration. While I have serious concerns about the all-too-typical Washington backroom deals that enabled this bill to get to the floor, I could not in good conscience vote against a bill whose most significant impacts will be jobs, growth, and opportunity for struggling American families.

"By passing Trade Promotion Authority, we create a path for trade agreements to reduce government-created barriers to prosperity. More economic growth will expand opportunity to those working to climb the economic ladder and achieve the American Dream.

"This bill increases the transparency of trade deals considered under its rules. It requires the public posting of the full text of any such agreement for at least 60 days before Congress begins consideration and reaffirms that Congress gets the final say. It would enable both this President and the next to expand trade that benefits American workers.

"This legislation ensures the United States will not be stuck on the sidelines as China aggressively pushes the 19 trade agreements it currently has under construction. It sends a message to the world that the United States will play an active role in writing the rules that will govern international trade this century. The cost to peace and prosperity of doing otherwise is too great to let this opportunity pass."

Well, look at how Hillary made out like a bandit when she got to “promote trade”

I’ll see if I can find some information.

“Cruz is no longer on my list of candidates to vote for in the primaries.”

Great! Let me know who’s left on your list at the end so I can just vote for him and not waste any more valuable time on this. I only ask that he be unassailable and perfect, as I wouldn’t vote for anything less (unlike millions of Dims who’ll have the next POTUS).

"He's explained it actually will increase accountability and visibility. "

That's absurd and only dedicated Crus sycophant could suggest otherwise.

Increased visibility and accountability...as opposed to WHAT EXACTLY?!?!?!

As opposed to the Constitutional process required in Article II, Section II, Clause ii?

You know, the one that requires 2/3 vote of the Senate to ratify a binding, international treaty?

Just how much "visibility and accountability" would THAT entail?

The TPA that Cruz voted for would preclude any Amendments and would require only 51 Senate votes to pass.

They even tossed the 60 vote filibuster rule.

Please explain to us ignorant folks just how this Classified Trade Deal will increase "visibility and accountability".

Hell, even the START treaties were not classified. Maybe you could explain that one too.

I am 100 percent behind this specific bill.

This is a “win-win.”

So WHY did Ted Cruz vote to give Obama authority, especially when that trade bill was not in the open for all to view?

Obama cannot be trusted. But this time he could've been stopped. This was an ideal opportunity, with the vast majority of dems opposed to a bill that would send jobs overseas, to have a real win against Obama.

Now the dems have an issue in the presidential election they didn't have to have, and Rand Paul and Donald Trump are the only ones running for the Republican nomination that supported US workers!

” I could not in good conscience vote against a bill whose most significant impacts will be jobs, growth, and opportunity for struggling American families.”

Right. After all, the other trade deals have worked out so great.

And the DC ruling class would not release this one for the citizens to study. We’ll just have to trust Hussein to negotiate deals in the interest of the American people. After all, the None is in the habit of watching out for our interests, right?

"Isn't this because of the maquiladoras? "

Why would this be of no consequence?

But, it's not the case. US Firms manufacturing in Mexico and immediately shipping back to the US...DO NOT count in the current account deficit.

Even though it's a practice that is draining the country of capital and jobs.

“20 years of NAFTA. Let’s examine the results of THIS REAL EXAMPLE and then, tell us Mr. Cruz, with a straight face, just how this gargantuan secret deal is going to be good for Americans and America.”

The same way the continuted flooding of our country with more immigrants is going to be good for America.

Re: Cruz’s amendment, I can’t find any information, except for the fact that Huffington Post (yeah, I know) says it never got a vote. But there are dozens of pending amendments still waiting, so it could be one of them.

Thanks, unfortunately I found this article describing that the amendment will not prevent or solve Mr. Cruz's concerns.

Are you sure? Can you link a source for that?

I've been of the belief that there was in the past, and maybe still, a large movement of parts from the US to Mexico for final assembly, then shipment back into the US for sale. And I've thought those items were counted both as exports to Mexico and then imports back into the US.

If you are correct, then the US trade deficit with Mexico is far more than the stated $60 billion or so at present.

With all due respect, this is a load of crap. Ted Cruz sided with dear leader in jamming another trade agreement ala NAFTA down our throats. But wait! There’s more!

As if that wasn’t enough, this fine bill provides a doorway for stealth amnesty. But wait! There’s even more!

Remember that UN small arms treaty? This bill provides a backdoor to that as well!

Sen. Cruz is a really smart and really aware guy. He knows damn well what the implications of this bill are yet voted for it anyway. He can skip the conservative schtick. He screwed us big time.

Screwing the middle class. Gun control. Amnesty. All in one neat package. Strike one, strike two, strike three. Yer out!
