Obama wins trade victory in the Senate
The Washington Post ^ | 5/22/2015 | Paul Kane

President Obama won a big victory for his trade agenda Friday with the Senate’s approval of fast-track legislation that could make it easier for him to complete a wide-ranging trade deal that would include 11 Pacific Rim nations.

A coalition of nearly 50 Senate Republicans and more than 10 Democrats voted for Trade Promotion Authority late Friday, sending the legislation to the House for a difficult fight as Obama faces more entrenched opposition from Democrats.

The Senate coalition fought off several attempts by opponents to undermine the legislation, defeating amendments that were politically popular but potentially poisonous to Obama’s bid to secure the trade deal.

“This is an important bill, likely the most important bill we will pass this year. It’s important to President Obama,” Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and primary author of the bill, said at the close of debate.

When NAFTA passed I said “When Clinton and Dole stand beside each other and praise NAFTA it can’t be good for the American people.”

I don’t understand why the republicans want to hand a would be tyrant more power. For some reason they really fear him and the power behind him.

And Cruz? Say it isn’t so.

Cruz has lost me. I was supporting him but that game is over. He is now on a level with Rand Paul to me. He’s no better. I don’t agree with any of them supporting a SECRET trade deal.

Jeff Sessions in the only one in DC watching out for us.

Something happens when people get to Washington. They lose touch with the real world, instead face an intensity of pressure to conform with the powers that be. It is sinister, and I don't know how to address it. No one seems immune.

I read his reply to the tweet:

“BOUGHT to you by the Chamber Of Commerce.”

The Chamber of Commerce is selling us down the river on immigration and now this. The GOPe and the Chamber can all rot in hell.

Cruz and none of them can convince me that this is good for the American worker. The Chamber of Commerce was behind amnesty. I believe this as their markings on it.

Cruz has lost me on this. I will not be supporting him. I am sick of all these clowns.

Actually, it's the Republicans and their major donors pushing this and most all major trade agreements. They're working with Obama just as they worked with Slick Willie to pass NAFTA. They want this TPP more than anything they fear about Obama.

And they know the terms of this agreement are being specified as much by transnational corporations as by Obama's trade reps. The real question might be what political pressures or ideologies caused Slick and Obama to support trade agreements the Dem. party largely opposed, and the Republican party largely supported.

Several conservative talkers and many others have framed their opposition as opposing any colluding with Obama, or not trusting Obama, but this is something most national Republican politicians want. - And those corporate players who heavily influence, or even dictate our trade policies, don't change much no matter who is president.

I’d sure like to see (or maybe dread) what kind of trade ideas ole Big Ears will have.

It’s hard to underestimate a dyed in the wool Democrat.

If you ask just corporate America without asking anyone else you get some weird ideas about what ought to be. Remember there was a lot of corporate support for Bummercare.

“I read that Cruz voted yes. I am disappointed to say the least.”

If Cruz voted yes, I would like to hear his reasoning. There has to be more to this bill then meets the eye.

“Hello, is this Smith? This is Bob calling from the Republican Senatorial Committee. As you know, the November election is fast approaching and we are faced with the most important and critical election of our lifetime. Barack Obama and his liberal agenda are destroying this country and he must be stopped now. The leadership of the Republican Party can do that with your support and a donation of $125.00 on your MasterCard today? Can you help the Republicans restore America?”
