To my horror I’ve found that they’re not even allowed to carry pocket knives anymore.

Wholly untrue. They are once they've been properly trained on safely carrying, using, and sharpening a knife (even if I already did so at home, they do it again when joining the Boy Scouts - they won't just take my word for it - good practice, actually).

My son has his Totin' Chip. That shows others he's learned proper safe-handling techniques of knives, hatches, axes and saws. With that, he can carry a knife. They cover this fairly early after crossing over from Webelos to Boy Scouts. Cub Scouts and Webelos are not allowed to carry knives during meetings/events (I honestly don't remember if they were allowed when I was a Cub or Webelos, but I know for a fact they were when I was a Boy Scout).

I taught my grandsons how to make a trebouchet.

I've got a pretty clear idea of who will be working for whom.

At the Pack level, we actually PLAN nerf gun battles. Our Pack/Troop/Crew has its own shooting sports program and chair.

It starts with piles of river rock and glass bottles to break, goes up to sling shots, to bb guns, to .22’s, to shotguns, then pistols, then higher cal long guns. We still haven’t got our black powder act together yet, but we do make our own self-bows and our own arrows.

For parents, they can use our BMG .50 cal., but even our Venture Scouts can’t use the .50. We put on a big BBQ and will bring the .50 so that we can get some donations for ammo. It’s also how we carve our watermelons! (Just kidding). The .50 cal rounds are $5 a piece at cost. Not cheap.

and his Firem'n Chit for carrying fire-starting tools (matches or flint/steel).

Fires will probably be a thing of the past too. GoreBull Warming and all.

I think my dad had the riflery badge.

Option A—Rifle Shooting (Modern cartridge type) Identify the three main parts of a rifle, and tell how they function.

Identify and demonstrate the three fundamental rules for safe gun handling.

Identify the two types of cartridges, their parts, and how they function.

Explain to your counselor what a misfire, hangfire, and squib fire are, and explain the procedures to follow in response to each. Identify and demonstrate the five fundamentals of shooting a rifle safely.

Identify and explain each rule for safe shooting.

Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely shoot a rifle from the benchrest position or supported prone position while using the five fundamentals of rifle shooting. Identify the basic safety rules for cleaning a rifle, and identify the materials needed.

Demonstrate how to clean a rifle properly and safely.

Discuss what points you would consider in selecting a rifle.

Using a .22 caliber rimfire rifle and shooting from a benchrest or supported prone position at 50 feet, fire five groups (three shots per group) that can be covered by a quarter. Using these targets, explain how to adjust sights to zero a rifle.

Adjust sights to center the group on the target* and fire five groups (five shots per group).

According to the target used, each shot in the group must meet the following minimum score: (1) A-32 targets—9; (2) A-17 or TQ-1 targets—7; (3) A-36 targets—5.

As a Boy Scouts merit badge councilor for rifle shooting and shotgun shooting as well as an NRA certified range master, Hunter Safety Certification Instructor and concealed carry permit holder, I think I am in a qualified position to discuss this issue.

I believe this is a sound change to policy. Just as the change in policy to ban Scouts from doing paintball gun fights as an authorized activity.

There is only a limited time to teach Scouts about gun safety. Many have never touched a gun before in their lives before I see them at the range.

On one hand we go to great lengths to teach the Five Elements of Gun Safety, and then send them out to shoot each other? That doesn’t make sense.

And many squirt guns have advanced to be near identical copies of real firearms.

Any of you remember the child shot and killed by police for waving a repro Airsoft gun at Police? As an element of my instructions for merit badges, I explain proper gun handling as treating every “gun” as real. It is just common sense and reinforcement that someone may mistake their toy as real. And if they are waving it around carelessly, something bad might happen.

I could care less what they do in their back yard, but when they wear their Class A uniform, they know to treat all guns as real and with respect.

It isn’t a game.

“I know right! I would also think that a water balloon the size of ping pong ball isn’t going to pop, but will probably hurt like hell when you get smacked in the face with one.”

They work even better if they are frozen first and used in sling. The sling is optional of course:~)

That is BS.

Once they are proven safe to carry one, they are allowed.

They have to earn their Totin’ Chip.

National Boy Scouts rules.

A water gun is NOT a firearm...simulated or otherwise.

That was my thought also. You need baseball sized water balloons to be useful.

Not sure by your comments if you are just breaking bottles generally or shooting them with firearms.

BSA rules, as well as NRA range rules, prohibit shooting glass objects with firearms.

My grandson who is in kindergarten told me he cannot play tag, zombie tag, or cops and robbers. Can only run on the grass—no running on cement or bark.

Your persistent sniping notwithstanding (oh how “scout like”), few, if any us target the boys or legitimate Scouters.

It’s the National office combined with the continued pussification and politically correct nature of the BSA that has us old timers hacked off.

Maybe, at some point, you might comprehend that and cease with the back biting comments you continue to toss out there at those of us who aren’t rolling over to this.

National has polluted the program and it has cascaded down into the Councils and Districts.

This is just one more symptom of what is going on at National and your sniping only serves to support their efforts by denigrating those of us who are trying to hold the line against those politically correct libtards.

The BSA Shooting manual does have those words in its pages, just not all lumped together. Selective editing is not stating a fact.
