Magma expanse under Yellowstone supervolcano more vast than thought

As tourists stroll between Yellowstone's 300 active geysers, taking selfies in front of thousands of bubbling, boiling mud pots and hissing steam vents, they are treading on one of the planet's greatest time bombs.

The park is a supervolcano so enormous, it has puzzled geophysicists for decades, but now a research group, using seismic technology to scan its depths, have made a bombshell discovery.

Yellowstone's magma reserves are many magnitudes greater than previously thought, say scientists from the University of Utah.

Underneath the national park's attractions and walking paths is enough hot rock to fill the Grand Canyon nearly 14 times over. Most of it is in a newly discovered magma reservoir, which the scientists featured in a study published on Thursday in the journal Science.

But still isn’t expected to erupt for 10,000 years. So don’t get too stressed.

Sounds like the spot Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas need to start disposing of water used in the fracking process....

I also like the magma magnitude study. Say that fast three time.

I can't say it fast even once....

Yes, but for silly fun you can’t beat “Volcano” with Tommy Lee Jones, 1997. It has the added benefits of the destruction of a lot of L.A., and a saccharine gratuitous post-Rodney King racial harmony message at the end. Those of a certain age will remember the endless promotions for “Krakatoa - East of Java” on Saturday p.m. movie showings. In my archaeology class in college in 1980 the professor began that segment by asking “Does anyone know where Krakatoa is?” At least half the class cried out “East of Java!” In fact, it’s west of Java. Good times.

I’m sure that Obama will not permit an eruption on his watch, but after Jan. 20, 2017, we’ll have to be on guard.

Yup. I remember the video from the Phillipines when Pinatubo went and felt bad for those folks driving away from the pyro as fast as they could and losing ground.

If relief drilling had an impact at all, it would be more likely to weaken the cap and begin the “unzipping”, in my opinion.

I seem to recall reading that a sudden infusion of water to that kind of system would set off steam explosions that would trigger a magma eruption. I don't remember where.

I thought for sure that “ayatollah” was going to be a very obscure, dated lyric by the time that song hit the “classic rock” stations. Alas...

Yes, He said so.

So where’s the ash and cinder buildup from a previous eruption? Where’s the cone?
