Portsmouth Public Schools admits concern over the presentation of a student's lunch served Tuesday at James Hurst Elementary.
Dozens of people reached out to 10 On Your Side after a student's mother posted a picture of the meal on social media. It shows cooked corn on a lunch platter, alongside a fish filet with a bun placed on top.
According to the school district's lunch menu, which is posted online, the lunch choices served Tuesday were the following:
Spicy Cajun Fish w/Brown Rice
Cold Cut Turkey Sub (w/g)
Assorted Chef Salad (Croutons & Crackers)
Steamed Carrots & Side Salad
Fresh Orange or Canned Fruit
1% & Skim Milk
10 On Your Side contacted Portsmouth Public Schools about the controversy. They released the following statement from Food Service Coordinator Jim Gehlhoff:
We appreciate this parent's concern about the presentation of this school lunch. Poor lighting and food presentation make this lunch unappealing. Other lunch options on the day this photo was taken included a chef's salad and turkey sub sandwiches. The meal in this photo and other meals served by Portsmouth Public Schools meet nutritional and USDA requirements. The presentation of the meal pictured concerns us and we plan to address presentation of food items in a training session with all cafeteria managers. Our goal is to provide healthy food options that students will want to eat. We will take actions to ensure that presentation is addressed.

they done kilt some poor SharPei puppy!
People keep sending their children to these places and accepting what happens. No reason to stop.
Some parents, no , most parents don’t care what their kid is given because it’s free.
if you can’t afford to give a child toast and jelly for breakfast and make a sandwich , apple etc for their lunch then don’t have a kid.
We stopped at 3 because that is all we could afford, shame others rely on working folks or scam the system to get their freebies.
Jail food is way better than that swill. Cook County makes a great pepper steak.
My 9 year old grandson would starve before he would put any of that in his mouth.
"YARK"
After seeing recent pics of OJ, I’d have to think you’re right!
The yellow tray looks delicious.
I saw what you did there. :)
The solution to this problem is simple. Ban kids from bringing cameras to school. < / libthink>
LOL!
The menu says Cajun fish with brown rice...now the corn can be made to look like brown rice I suppose, but corn isn't even listed on the menu...nor is the bun.
Looks more to me like Giant Snail sushi with
predigested corn...
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Yeah, in good light it’s cordon bleu...
If that was served at the White House The Wookiee would have the Cook Beheaded
Seems to be how they plan on addressing police misconduct...
The gripe these parents and students have is with the cafeteria staff.
Lighting? Hell’s bells, naked dancing girls couldn’t improve the presentation of that horrid, nasty dreck! Let’s make the 0bamas eat it!
At the LEAST, they could give them organic WHOLE milk!
1% milk -that was what was left over after grampa ran the milk separator - after saving out WHOLE milk for the table.
Then the separated cream went into the cool cellar-way for Friday’s butter churning.
the ‘blue’ stuff - 1% - went into the swill bucket for the pig! And even then, that was ORGANIC...
This is criminal - well, of course 90% of this swill goes into the garbage - and the kids go hungry. But hey! They’ll lose weight and ‘chew-barker’ will claim her menus orders work!
