Dick Morris: Rand Paul can’t win
The Hill ^ | 04/07/2015 | Dick Morris

Posted on 04/11/2015 5:32:02 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

In most presidential primaries, there is a candidate who cannot win. All the other candidates want him to finish second because they are sure that if they can get him one-on-one in a runoff, they will defeat him. The victim must have enough intense support to be able to do well in crowded fields — well enough to make the second round. But he must have sharp limits to his potential vote that doom him to failure.

In 1976 it was George Wallace. In 1988 it was Jesse Jackson. In 1992 it was Jerry Brown. In 1996 it was Steve Forbes. In 2000 it was John McCain. In 2004 it was Howard Dean. In 2008 it was Mike Huckabee (who, like McCain, may do better in his second incarnation). In 2012 it was Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum.

In the Republican nominating process of 2016, it is Rand Paul. There’s no question that Paul has an active and passionate base that will earn him votes throughout the primary process. So he is well equipped to make the second round. But, once there, he cannot win.

Particularly as foreign events continue to remind us that we live in a turbulent and threatening world, Paul’s brand of neo-isolationism cannot attract a majority of any electorate in any election. His views seem to predate 1941. While his proposals to reduce the power of the Federal Reserve and his crusade against crony capitalism will win adherents, his support for legalization of drugs, though popular on campus, will turn off voters. His advocacy of a gold standard is either very much behind the times or very much ahead of them. His tepid opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage will appeal to nobody.

Eight years ago I said America would never elect a president named Hussein.

He has a point, but then again, he talked himself out of a gig at Fox.

Holy cow! Your comment made me watch it.

I had no idea what was in it. I bought that album when it was just released and just pulled up a random video of it.

Hard not to watch. :-}

He can not win. Too many Republicans will stay home. Not only does he have his own baggage to carry, he also has his father’s.

Let’s not forget that “Nostradamus-like” book he wrote in 2007... Hillary vs Condi.... he’s a very poor prognosticator, indeed !

The Toe Sucker is always wrong, but he may be right about this. I hope so, anyway. Rand Paul was interesting when he first came on the scene. Then he decided he’d be Mitch McConnell’s buddy and went soft on illegal aliens. Not interested anymore.

CRUZ TO VICTORY OR GET BUSHED !

Morris is good only for looking into the dark hearts of the Clinton Clan. Other than that a chimp with a dart board would have better luck making predictions. But with Hillary running again he could be useful this election.

I didn’t think so until Dick Morris said he couldn’t.

Paul as VP can push a Republican ticket over the top. Enough libertarian Dems will cross over plus talking to a black audience gave him street cred. Put Cruz or Walker at the top and it is a landslide.

Dick Morris is now doing infomercials for something called the “Crash Proof Retirement System”.

He should stick to that instead of politics.

Damn right Rand Paul cannot win. There are lots of people out there myself included who would not throw a bucket of urine on him if he were on fire.

With Cruz, Walker & Rubio its hard to see how Randy Rand can evolve as the winner.

It's the same Dick Morris who was once sure that the 2008 election would be a contest between Hillary Clinton and Condi Rice.

They should be popping champagne corks at Paul headquarters over this pronouncement by Dick Morris, given his track record with predictions.

I wouldn’t take advice from Karl Rove or Dick Morris. In the case of Rand Paul...he might have three or four states fall into the win-column for the primary...beyond that, I wouldn’t count on that. I also don’t think either Cruz or Walker or Bush would pick him for VP or a cabinet post.
