Roughly a third of Americans say that businesses should be allowed to refuse gay customers on religious grounds, and the figure rises to almost half for businesses that provide wedding services, according to an NBC News poll released on Thursday.
The poll found a sharp political divide on the issue. By a margin of 65 percent to 35 percent, Republicans said that businesses should be allowed to turn away gay customers. Democrats, by a margin of 82-18, said that they should not.
The youngest group of respondents, people aged 18 to 29, were most likely to say that businesses should be required to serve gay customers a margin of roughly 3-to-1.
The poll, which surveyed 2,052 adults nationwide, was taken Monday through Wednesday, in the wake of a nationwide furor over laws in Indiana and Arkansas that supporters said were designed to protect religious freedom.

Way too low numbers.
Media members fiddling with the polls, no doubt.
Sounds like a push-poll to me.
Businesses should have the RIGHT OF FIRST REFUSAL so as to comply with their conscience.
Either way, it’s none of the feds business. Sexual orientation and discrimination of same is not an issue over which the Constitution gives the feds. These are states’ issues via the will of the people of each state.
No one has been arguing for denying service just because they are gay, it’s conduct the gays are forcing on everyone else.
As usual it’s in how the question is phrased. Had they asked “should a business be forced to participle in an activity which violates their religious beliefs”, you might get different results.
Freedom of religion is not up for vote.
You would think but people are being driven out of business for their religious beliefs.
I do not think businesses should be “allowed to refuse gays” at all. Ridiculous. That would be like refusing left handers or Japanese.
1. On religious grounds, businesses should be able to refuse activity that is prohibited by their beliefs. Meaning if a clearly gay couple came into the bakery and wanted to buy two pink sprinkled cupcakes, you can’t refuse to sell them. But if they wanted you to help with their wedding party, you may refuse.
2. Businesses may refuse to serve anyone at any time. But the reasons should be things like personal (the guy hit on my wife) or cleanliness (a street bum) or safety (a guy who seems drunk and violent). A business should NOT be allowed to keep refusing service to blacks or gays or Jews.
That’s pretty good for a phoney push poll. Even calling gay-friendly zip codes they still found a 3rd rejecting them....
No one on TV anyway.
But they did ask the same question about wedding services and ~ half responded that businesses should be forced to service those.
It is NOT about refusing to serve “gay” customers.
It is about refusing to provide a specific service, something the business doesn’t provide because of moral conviction.

Beware of the PC results of constitutionally ignorant polls.
Even if all Americans thought that businesss should be required to serve gay customers despite religious objections, it remains that both federal and state governments are obligated to protect the constitutionally enumerated right of religious expression of citizens including business owners.
The issue isn’t rejecting homosexual customers. The issue is being forced to participate in activities found morally repugnant.
That really tells all you need to know about the subject. Absolutely nothing in the Constitution that makes it a federal matter. The states can do what they want with it,but must realize that their decisions can determine a lot about the problems they create for themselves.
This is what we are dealing with folks. We need to spread this meme to others who don't understand what's happening.
I personally feel that anyone should be allowed to make a value judgment in dealing with people on a business level as long as they are not representing government. if I own a business and some one enters my business I should have the right to refuse them business for what ever reason I want to give. I call this my right to be an asshole if I want.
Polls on abortion a similar broad and vague to make it appear the majority support abortion rights. But, when the polls are more specific, the vast majority oppose abortion except in the cases of rape, incest and the mother's life being endangered.
States cannot violate the Bill of Rights either.
