No repercussions for Rolling Stone reporter, editors in U.Va. rape story

There will be no repercussions for the investigative reporter or editors responsible for a now-retracted

Rolling Stone cover story in November that falsely accused Phi Kappa Psi fraternity members at the University of Virginia of gang-raping a freshman coed.

In a stinging report released Sunday evening, an independent review by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism said the magazine was reckless in vetting its sources, including the purported victim, identified only as “Jackie,” and neglected “basic, even routine journalistic practice.”

“If Jackie was attacked and, if so, by whom, cannot be established definitively from the evidence available,” the review stated, adding that there needed to be a better balance between “sensitivity to victims and the demands of verification.”

The 12,866-word report, released Sunday night after more than three months of comprehensive research, said the story’s author, Rolling Stone contributing editor Sabrina Rubin Erdely, could have avoided catastrophe had she contacted other sources for fair comment.

“The editors invested Rolling Stone’s reputation in a single source,” the report said.

In a statement posted on the website, Rolling Stone Managing Editor Will Dana said the magazine was “officially retracting” the story.

The laughable part of all this is the line "The editors invested Rolling Stone’s reputation in a single source,”

There is no reputation at this magazine left, if there was any at all to begin with.

The media lies every day. Occasionally they get caught. No one cares.

“If Jackie was attacked and, if so, by whom, cannot be established definitively from the evidence available,”

She was not attacked. She lied.

End of story.

I think a Court should decide Rolling Stones fate.

The 2016 candidates beware it is the accusation that counts, they can make anything up, any unidentified or nonexistent someone from high school, college, or former job can accuse you of anything, apparently slander, defamation, and false accusations has no remedy.

Even if you sue, that would just bring more attention to the accusation, it is all the media will ask about, forcing you to continually assert your innocence, why do you continue to deny; on and on it will go, the template has been set.

What’s a few more “innocent victims” in the left’s crusade towards its goals? Seriously, in the last 100 years, a few college students and a non-Ivy League school comprise minor collateral damage to them in their artificial world of manufactured reality.

There needs to be punishment for women like this. I would like to see the reporter, editor and accuser all receive the same jail sentence that a rapist would receive.

She had the same repercussions that Harry Reid had about admitting he lied about Romney’s taxes. In fact, he bragged about it.

Politicians arent always forthcoming with the truth. But, lying has been raised to its highest art form by liberals.

A libel suit would be most justified for repercussions.

Meanwhile, a pizza restaurant in Indiana is forced to close because an employee stated, in response to a hypothetical questions, the establishment would not serve food at a wedding.

The Columbia Journalism Report is quite detailed and makes interesting reading.

They question everything and ask all the right questions.

Except

They never once question the phenomenon of organized, Federally required and Federally-funded groups of “survivors”, membership in which is attained by unsupported oral statements, and carries with it, among other things, lots of personal attention and relief from some of the less desirable aspects of highly competitive college life.

The phenomenon of being a self-declared “survivor of sexual assault” is a complete novelty, not subject to reality testing or even to dispute. There are now many examples that have made their way into the media (and, therefore, presumably many more that have not) wherein the accused male student has been acquitted in a court, or states have declined to prosecute, or even (in the Columbia University mattress girl case) where the local kangaroo court has found the male student innocent, wherein the constant slander against the accused and support for the “survivor” continue.

THAT is the real cause of the Rolling Stone contretemps. It’s a shame that the report did not even mention it.

I think a Court should decide Rolling Stones fate.

Only if there's a plaintiff. Who's the plaintiff?

Good! This will make the punitive damages in the civil case larger. Hope the frat and its members end up owning that rag. Would be a fitting end.

The media is disqualifying itself, yet the GOP/conservatives still sit on the edge of their chairs like naughty children in the principal’s office when being interrogated and lectured to by the media.
