Ray Odierno: Army changes tattoo policy, effective immediately

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno confirmed Wednesday that the Army will change its unpopular tattoo policy, with looser rules that allow for more ink to take effect in the near future.

“Society is changing its view of tattoos and we have to change along with that. It makes sense. Soldiers have grown up in an era when tattoos are much more acceptable and we have to change along with that,” the general said while speaking at a conference in Huntsville, Alabama, Army Times reported.

It seems to me that at least half of young people of all races have tats nowadays. I’m not a fan, but it seems dumb to restrict half or more of your potential recruits over that.

They’re actually a big deal in the military, and there has been an uproar within the ranks over the Army’s attempt to crack down on them. That’s what Odierno is responding too.

why some people insist on having an extreme appareance by having tattoos.

A wise man once told me The hollower the inside, the more ornamented the outside.

Obama doesn’t want black and mexican gangbangers disqualified from being mercs against US citizens.

You left out the Salvadorans, etc., but essentially, you have a winner.

Lots of these “young people” get gang / gang-related tattoos and the armed forces has never wanted that crap on their soliders because of the character of the people with them.

They also don’t want visible tattoos showing outside of uniforms as it a visible detraction.

And to be clear the armed forces already lets people in with tattoos. It’s not that they have barred young people from serving because they have a tattoo.

It’s always been location, size and content restricted.

Loosening up the existing regs is a bad idea.

Looked and sounded like war-cries, didn’t it?
US Team players should have raised both hands in sign of a gun, and yelled “BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!”

I don't think the military has ever restricted all tattoos on its members. In fact when I was a kid the only people who had tats were veterans, bikers, and carnival workers. This is about loosening standards and allowing more extreme body coverage.

Thanks. The expressions on the American players faces (they’re not Rugby players so guess they’ve never seen a Haka in person) are priceless. “These motherf#@$ers are crazy!”

People who mutilate their bodies, hate themselves (and God) and are usually Satanic and anti-Christian.

This normalization of Satanic, pagan practices is on purpose......vice breeds vice and he wants to destroy the Christian Worldview of the USA military—since they are going to be groomed to be like the homosexual Nazis, where killing their own citizens, even women and children, is easy. it is w,hy they promote and glorify the vice of bestiality and sodomy.now.

It is total transformation of our military. He has been purging those and censoring anyone who has a Christian Worldview—where there is dignity and Worth in every human beings. Homosexuals are puerile fixated people—and who will take demonic orders gladly.

I’ve always felt that the act of tatooing was a form of self mutilation. And who is the author of self mutilation?

Maybe they will now relax the standards on body piercings also. A few nose rings and half dollars in the ear lobes would be stylish in a dress uniform.

Incorrect.

Tattoos can cause serious illness from contamination. Sometimes these illnesses do not show up till later. This can cause the individual to not be deploy-able.

Tattoos can be of a nature to be disruptive to the good order and conduct of the Army. An example of this would be an Aryan Nation or NAZI tattoo. Such tattoos can seriously disrupt unit cohesion.

Additionally, tattoos that are not viewed in the US as being offensive, can be very offensive to other nations where the individual is deployed. Crosses or Stars of David can lead to big problems with host countries.

Tattoos can cause serious illness from contamination. Sometimes these illnesses do not show up till later.

If done correctly, tattoos are safe with no infections almost 100% of the time. It's not rocket science.

Tattoos can be of a nature to be disruptive to the good order and conduct of the Army.

Someone should tell that to the Army. They've had tattooed soldiers for decades.

An example of this would be an Aryan Nation or NAZI tattoo.

Those tattoos are not permitted, and still won't be permitted, under these changes.

Tattoos have zero to do with whether or not one can honorably & effectively serve their country.

Sure. Of course. Whatever you say.
