(CNN)Gov. Mike Pence pledged Tuesday to "fix" Indiana's controversial religious freedom law to clarify that it does not allow discrimination against gays and lesbians.
But he insisted the problem isn't the law itself but how it's being perceived, saying a fix is needed only because of "frankly, the smear that's been leveled against this law." And he said the fix won't involve statewide anti-discrimination protections for LGBT Hoosiers.
The first-term Republican governor sought to tamp down the backlash Indiana has faced since he signed the law -- which its in-state supporters had claimed would allow businesses to turn away LGBT customers -- last week. He said he's asking state lawmakers to send him a followup measure before this week's end to ensure that's not the case.
"It would be helpful to move legislation this week that makes it clear that this law does not give businesses a right to deny services to anyone," Pence said in a press conference in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

[[The language of the new bill doesnt matter. By admitting they need to clarify the law, they admit the law is about discrimination. And this type of caving every time some hypersensitive whiner claims offense is exactly why so many people are led to believe Republicans are intollerant.]]
Had to repost- well said!
May your chains rest lightly, and may posterity forget you were our Countrymen. I paraphrase, of course.
There is nothing “we” are going to do to stop it
— only if that “we” is absent the Lord, and it is absent the Lord only by our own choice! We told God to take the hike, personally! We can’t blame some nameless neighbor!
You are lukewarm and will be spit out.
Oh for God’s own sake. Drama queen. You want a self powered liberty and there is none. There is only another flavor of slavery.
You are doing it without God and YOU will be spit out while I will be retained!
” Pence buckling is his problem, its not Teds.”
Nailed it.
This idiot should have gone outside the state on a business trip etc while the heat cools down. Walker had the same worse backlash and he didn’t flinch.
Really? He didn’t expect a backlash? Was he not paying attention when AZ signed a similar bill?
Saw most of the press conference.
And, wow, what a display. “Cowering pool” seems an apt description. It really is amazing. Of course, I’ve long come to expect this from the GOP. It’s one of the reasons I’ve grown to hold them in such contempt (sans a tiny handful of straight-talking exceptions like Cruz, Palin and the like). But even in the bigger picture, I never associated such sheer cowering and gutlessness to even be a part of the American character. I don’t recall ever seeing things like this, decades ago.
Americans used to have spines. They used to have convictions. It’s just jaw-dropping when you really take a broader look through the prism of historical context, and realize what has become of things. It really has become like we’re living behind an iron-curtain of PC-fascism, with a populace/leadership that cowers and whimpers like whipped dogs on a leash.
After reading it, I don't know what it does.
Then he's an idiot.
[[Ted doesnt have to say much at all.]]
He could make a statement “I DID support pence until he of course caved on the issue- the bill was the right thing to do, it was NOT discriminatory, and both Clinton and our current leader signed onto the very same bills before this bill even came to the forefront in Indiana- so if you, the press, are going to crucify someone over this issue, at least be consistent and attack Clinton and current dear l leader for supporting the same types of bills- do your job for once, and report something in an objective, fair and balanced manner- if it’s not too difficult for you- oh, and please remove you noses from the posterior of the president- it’s unbecoming of you- thanks for playing!”:
And you have guts to call me the drama queen?!?! Lol. You're funny. I like you, but you're funny.
It would be interesting to see how Cruz would handle the last few days that Pence had to. Being a Senator is pretty easy compared to being Governor. I think Pence is wrong on this but unless Cruz had the same outcome we don’t know how he would react. Cruz already said he respected Pence fully and completely.
Sorry. I was referring to any “correction” bill language (if any) Pence may support in response to the backlash.
Its easy enough to condemn. However that is the old circular firing squad in action.
This probably more than anything else costs us (conservatives) support in elections, among legislators, and elsewhere.
Frankly, that circular firing squad reminds me of the left.
I agree. I will do the same. There are too many knee jerks on this site to give up when they have not seen the final language.
I guess you missed the point- He SHOULD HAVE anticipated this backlash ESPECIALLY considering that the bill was an affront to the left’s core ideology- Even if it wasn’t he still should have expected this kind of backlash because they left HATE the right- the fact that he claims he didn’t expect this shows that he is naive at best- It is no different than the myriad other dolts I n the GOPe that go on msnbc thinking they are going to get a fair shake, and are ‘dumbfounded’ when they sit there for 20 minutes getting attacked from every angle “Golly, I didn’t see that coming”
Sorry, but the man should have known better- Yes, shoudla woudla coulda- IT’S HIS JOB to represent we the people and to be prepared to defend himself and his bills against the inevitable onslaught by the left- after many decades of nasty politics by the left, this should be very apparent- but evidently many still do NOT get it? How naive is that?
[[everybody is abandoning Pence]]
Gee, I wonder why?
While I agree he is a coward. I do wonder just how much support he is receiving?
