Researchers from Harvard University have successfully inserted genes from a woolly mammoth into living cells from an Asian elephant, the extinct giant's closest remaining relative.
Harvard geneticist George Church used DNA from Arctic permafrost woolly mammoth samples to copy 14 mammoth genes -- emphasizing those related to its chilly lifestyle.
"We prioritized genes associated with cold resistance including hairiness, ear size, subcutaneous fat and, especially, hemoglobin," Church told The Sunday Times.
Then, using a kind of DNA cut/paste system called CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat), Church dropped the genes into Asian elephant skin cells.
The result? A petri dish of elephant cells functioning normally with mammoth DNA in them, marking the first time mammoth genes have been on the job since the creature went extinct some 4,000 years ago, as Sarah Fecht, from Popular Science, noted.
Longer term, Church and his team hope to first create hybrid elephant/mammoth embryos, grown in artificial wombs, and then raise hybrid elephants that could be genetically wired to thrive in colder climes -- hopefully expanding their range to live at a greater remove from humans.
Longer, longer term, if the hybrid elephant can be created and successfully integrated in the wild, then the team might even try to bring back the woolly mammoth itself.

Playing around with wooly mammoth DNA is far safer than playing around with bacteria or viruses.
I think you wee trying to direct the comment to me. I agree that it refers to the suddenness of the event but it also refers to what people will be doing at the time of the coming of the Son of Man the same things they were doing at the time of Noah. Very good record is found in the Book of Enoch. Have you considered why there was no grace and mercy shown to anyone but to 8 people. Clue:Genesis 3.
#1 My bible doesn’t have the Book of Enoch.
#2 I have no clue about Gen.3 excluding everyone but 8 people for mercy and grace.
Your Bible has a direct quotation from the Book of Enoch in Jude, Peter also quotes it. It is not scripture but gives some extra info.
Genesis 3 gives you an idea why only Noah and his family were spared.
You can check it for yourself, or not, I don’t really care. The point is that man trying to improve on God isn’t anything new and it always ends bad for the little gods wanna-be’s.
Good night.
Sorry, my mistake, meant to say Genesis 6, not 3, long day.
“Theres plenty of grub around for a few wooly mammoths!”
I’d certainly rather subsidize Iowa corn fields for wooly mammoths than ethanol!
Great, now can they just inject some jellyfish genes into the GOPe cells in order to stiffen up their spines...?
Elephants will now be injected so they can survive our new Global Cooling climate.
Mars One volunteers perhaps..
Not a good comparison.
Elephants have their trunk in the front, FLOTUS has her trunk in the back.
Siberia
Genesis 6 makes a whole lot more sense.
If they’re successful in breeding, will we then have to endure “how do you get down off a wooly mammoth” jokes?
or, How many wooly mammoths can you put into an empty VW beetle?
Yes!! LOL!!
;’)
My Bible doesn’t either. Like a said earlier it is not an inspired book but provides an expanded history of all the stuff going on before the flood, thanks to the fallen angels. You will notice Genesis 6:12 says that the whole earth became corrupted. Also, it includes a lot of other things that Enoch experienced, and prophecies about the coming of the Son of Man. The Book of Enoch has a couple of later gnostic insertions in it which I don’t care about.
Kind of like the Book of Jasher, mentioned I believe 2 times in the OT, Joshua and Second Samuel. Not inspired but a history book from the creation until the death of Joshua.
