The odds of a pilot having a heart attack just when the other pilot's in the john are pretty slim. Possible, but pretty unlikely.

The other pilot wouldn't leave cockpit until the airplane is at the cruise altitude and on autopilot. At that point there isn't much to do. If the pilot in the chair suddenly got incapacitated, why would he be disengaging autopilot and then carefully executing the descent? The autopilot would guide the airplane through the whole course, and the crew outside would have at least an hour or two to figure out what to do. We say many things about Airbuses, but I doubt that any autopilot these days will just reach the end of programmed path and turn itself off, letting the airplane to fall to the ground. There were crashes that involved dead crew (such as in Greece,) and the autopilot kept the airplane flying until all the fuel was used up.

Odds that the pilot’s first, middle or last name was “Mohammed”?

There could even be a "Hussein" in there somewhere.

Pitot tubes are used to measure air speed

google it for a scientific explanation- it is simple but is used on everything from small to big planes

Lessee here. So due to an amazing coincidence...during the short time that one pilot is out of the cockpit, the other pilot has a medical emergency. Dies or is incapacitated. And due to yet another amazing coimcidence, the door is locked without the other pilot having a key or access. And due to yet another amazing coincidence, just before becoming incapacitated, communications from passengers are shut down. And due to yet another amazing coincidence, the plane is taken off autopilot and makes a descent into a mountain.

What an amazing set of coincidences!

Maybe there WAS a flight attendant in there with the co-pilot. And she was the terrorist. Stab the co-pilot, lock the door, pilot the plane into the ground.

Good theory for the cockpit personnel problem.

If that's the cse, though, why then turn off the cellphone repeaters and ground phone comms? Possible answer - to buy time, and prevent from being shot down by the Mirages?

Problem with that - time is only important if you're aiming for a target, like a city. And why wouldn't you, if you're a Muslim terrorist? But apparently the goal was just a long, slow descent into the mountains. Doesn't sound like a terrorist target.

Exactly. If the pilot in the cockpit had suddenly croaked there would have been a lot more time than they had.

This makes what, three cases in a year of pilots crashing their planes?

You can still cause terror by slamming 150 people into a mountain.

Language, accents, dress, and mannerisms as well as, frankly, their looks in general. I don’t know what alerted the lady who had the scary experience, but I study people at the gate. I’m not sure if the airline would permit a look at the passenger list, but it’s certainly worth asking.

Sound like a lot like that pervert pilot Gameel Al-Batouti, who locked his copilot out of the flight deck of Egyptair Flight 990 and sent it into a powerdive over the Atlantic Ocean killing everyone aboard.

I think it could have been a hijacking attempt that went wrong.

I haven’t seen anything to support that theory. Someone would have had to have gotten into the cockpit somehow, and then somehow the plane got taken off autopilot and did a controlled descent.

About as likely as there being a conservative working in the West Wing at the Obama White House.

Check out the pilots when boarding. I always speak with them before finding my seat. Thinking about asking “Are you both Christian?” on my next flight!
