What are the odds of a pilot having a medical emergency at the very minute the other pilot leaves the cockpit?

Odds are this was terrorism.

the pilot who left the cockpit is then heard ‘knocking lightly on the door’ but there is no answer.

The pilot continues to hit the door with more force but ‘there is never an answer’.

He said: ‘You can hear he is trying to smash the door down.’

Well, they can probably rule out any rapid decompression while in flight.

So much for that.

Will be interesting, tho, if any cell phone footage is recovered from a passenger.

Maybe the pilot in the cockpit was sexting?

I got to see a profile of the decent today, it was rather constant.

If the pilot had a health issue, unless something massive, you'd a think he'd call for help from the crew, or call a mayday

Remember, these Airbus's are side sticks so their is nothing to fall on if he is incapacitated...

Where does that leave us...

Maybe after being in the air for several hours, a pilot might have to use the john, but the plane had just taken off.

Pilot in cockpit was praying to his moon god.

It’s happened before in all kinds of aircraft.

I once had a jet ranger helicopter 500’ overhead nearly totally out of control. I thought it was mechanical issue. When it landed we found the pilot had a heart attack and was still barely able to land it.

Possibly the pilot was sick and the other went to get help from a FA.

Why wouldn’t he just call the FA?

I am not saying that a flight attendant was called in because the pilot is sick...it is standard operating procedure to have a flight attendant stand in the cockpit while a pilot leaves the cockpit for any reason. It’s a safety procedure in the event the single pilot in the cockpit has a medical issue while the other pilot is using the restroom, etc. I am wondering first why the pilot left the cockpit...may to use the restroom? At that point a flight attendant would have been placed in the cockpit.

Just had a thought..

It was a strange time for one of the pilots to be out of the cockpit..he must have left while the plane was still climbing..

Maybe the rogue pilot had a buddy as a passenger and he did something which caused the good pilot to be called to help by a attendant..

a rouse to get him out of the cockpit so the rogue pilot could put the plane into the mountain ..

another thought I had yesterday was that there may have been a bomb aboard and it was suppose to go off while the plane was still over the water..the Mediterranean..so it would end up in deep water..

the plane crashed within minutes of flying over land again..maybe the bomb was late or the plane reached the land a bit earlier than expected..or didnt5 totally incapacitate the plane at first..

I thought it might have messed up the radio or systems..

however this new scenario works too..

Two of my adult children are leaving on Monday to spend two weeks in Japan. Stuff like this makes me quite nervous.

I wondered about that too- that perhaps the other pilot left the cockpit to get help -but wouldn’t he have called a flight attendant, instead of leaving the cockpit?

The Malaysians were pretty quick to name the pilots on those flights, but this crash seems to be more quiet related to the pilots.

I still think autopilot was programed to take them down. There is a report from CBSN that they tried to climb at the last minute.

There isn’t a toilet in the Cockpit, certainly not on that plane, and I don’t know that any do have one.

I'm no aeronautical engineer, but that seems like a security oversight.

All a terrorist would have to do then is wait for a pilot to open the door and head for the toilet. Then the terrorist could rush the cockpit before the door is closed again. It would seem to me that he'd have a real shot of getting into the cockpit. Then all hell breaks loose.

That plane was probably on autopilot once at cruising altitude. Thats probably when the pilot got up to go to the bathroom. Somebody locked the door. and from my understanding the settings for altitude have to be changed by someone.

I remember a few years ago a story about a flight where both pilots fell asleep and overflew their destination a few hundred miles. Autopilot maintained the altitude.
