A fierce row has broken out between Stephen King and Maine Governor Paul LePage after the governor claimed that the author doesn't pay state income taxes and has moved away from the state. King immediately shot back that LePage should 'man up and apologize' for the comments because he still resides in Maine. LePage's comments came during his weekly radio address when he argued that states without an income tax, like Florida, have lured away Maine residents, including King.

protip: If you're a Republican governor, and want to cut taxes, get your darn **** together.

Seriously, it's like diving into a shark tank and cutting yourself with a knife.

Get rid of your state income tax to be competitive. Neither Florida or Texas have it and they seem to be doing very well. When I was in the Army, the first time I was stationed in Texas, I changed my home of record to Texas and I stopped paying it too. Only smart thing to do if you have an alternative.

Even though the accusation isn’t true, why shouldn’t a resident of one state move to another state where the taxes are more favorable to them personally? I don’t see a problem with that!

Off topic, but in that side by side photo display in the Daily Mail article — King looks like Janet Reno.

Steve must love Maine very much if he’s paying $1.4m per year in state taxes to live there half the year.

Here’s my question. If you live in three States for four months in each, are you a resident of any?

It depends on what the meaning of “is” is, LOL.

Visiting the various DMVs to change driver licenses every 4 months would probably be enough to make most folks commit hari-kari

When I was in the Air Force, my home state of Michigan didn't tax active duty pay.

Never understood why anybody would live in a state that has an income tax.

There’s these things called trains, planes, and automobiles, makes it easy to move.

King is a whack job , paying over a million dollars a year to live in Maine?

I live in Maine. Gov. Paul LePage is one of the most conservative governors in the country, perhaps THE most conservative, and he, the governor, doesn’t mince words.

Maine has had once of the highest state income taxes in the country. Gov. LePage has reduced it somewhat, but he recently announced that he wants to get rid of the state income tax altogether, and the estate tax, too.

Stephen King is a big time lib, so he and LePage have been at odds before.

The governor has recently said, “There are no rich people in Maine. They have moved to New Hampshire, Texas, Florida, Arizona, and South Carolina. If you want to see rich people in Maine, you’ll see them in the summer.”

If you live in Florida for six months plus one day per year, you’re considered to be a resident of Florida. Many middle class people winter in Florida and then spend five or six months in Maine. I know many people who do just that.
It’s not just “the rich.”

Also, the governor wants to tax the liberal “non-profit” groups here in Maine.....man, are they complaining about THAT idea!

LePage is also a very strong Second Amendment guy.

New Hampshire has neither an income *nor* sales tax.The state has been growing by leaps and bounds for decades, largely thanks to refugees from Massachusetts,But these refugees have turned the state Rat...so they'll soon have an income *and* a sales tax.

For the children,of course.

For all I know, Stephen King likes living in Maine. Cannot for the life of me fathom why it would be worth $1.4 MM per year in taxes to live there. But it apparently is to him.
