Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is pushing back hard against conservative claims that the recent Republican letter to Iranian leaders, which has infuriated the White House amid delicate nuclear talks, is akin to her 2007 visit to Syria against the wishes of the Bush administration.
The office of the House minority leader issued a scathing statement Wednesday night saying her meeting with Syrian dictator Bashar Assad was part of a bipartisan effort conducted through the Bush administration to encourage peace in the region, and accusing Republicans of launching a "desperate" defense of their Iran letter to mask criticisms coming from both sides of the aisle.
"The desperate hyperventilation by Republicans and conservative talkers over the intense, national backlash to this letter has caused them to search for a Democratic equivalent to the dangerous precedent set by 47 Republican Senators," said Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill. "The fact is, there is simply not one."
The letter, endorsed by all but seven Senate Republicans, is an attempt to undercut a potential nuclear deal being negotiated between Iran, the Obama administration and five other world powers a deal the Republicans fear will leave the Iranians fully capable of manufacturing nuclear weapons. The Republicans, who are pushing instead for tougher sanctions, warned Iranian leaders that any agreement could be abolished when Obama's term ends less than two years from now.
"The next president could revoke such an executive agreement with the stroke of a pen, and future Congresses could modify the terms of the agreement at any time, reads the letter, spearheaded by freshman Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.).

It was worse — traitor.
Anyone who attains the position of Speaker of the House and then tells the American people that “we have to pass the bill so you can find out what’s in it” should never be taken seriously about anything. Ever.
The flak is always the heaviest when you're over the target!
I'm sorry but that just brings up images in my mind that I can't erase.
True... all they did is write an “open letter”, which is no worse than writing an op-ed piece in the newspaper. You on the other hand, actually went and met with a terrorist leader which IS treason.
True Nan.
Coddling the enemy is nothing like warning them off.
What I don’t get is that, while the Bush admin opposed Pelosi’s 2007 trip to Syria and that of other members of Congress, including Republicans, why did the State Dept. facilitate it and the Defense Dept. execute it (travel, etc.)? Why not just tell the beyotch, “No visas, no military aircraft, nothing.” And then let Stretch b!tch about it.
Exactly!
A picture is worth a thousand lies debunked.
Bullshit you lying bitch. It was worse, in person, traitorous actions.
Good to see she got called on that. And yes, it was worse. It was face-to-face extralegal negotiation with a foreign head of state.
Being a member of the House instead of the Senate makes her act even more egregious.
Presidents used to be as deferential as possible to Congress, even when they didn’t agree. Since it was done in public and Pelosi got GOP henchmen and they requested Administration help, they accommodated but had no problem criticizing. I don’t find a reference to the Logan Act or treason being invoked against Pelosi.
Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, on the other hand, simply committed treason.
She's right -- she should have been expelled from office and taken to prison in chains.
Kinda sorta the exact same thing, Nancy. You can run, but you can’t hide, Nancy
Since the ratification of agreements between nations is under the authority of the Senate, rather than the house, then a visit by a congressman to a foreign leader against the wishes of either the president or the senate could be considered a violation of the Logan act, unless she was there to just discuss the weather and try out her new hijab..
The Senate is authorized by the constitution to participate in advice and consent on all agreements between the United States and a foreign government. The house is not.
So she’s right, her visit was nothing like the Senate Letter. Her visit was illegal and the Senate Letter was clearly appropriate.
