“It’s kids being stupid caught up in the moment. Does anyone seriously think they wanted to hang anyone from a tree?”

“...’disgusting’ son...” “...sickening video...”

Yeah, but at least he's not a racist. </sarcasm>

There is quite a difference. I think a college should not expel him for free speech. I think private citizens should kick the crap out of him - if they wish — or not. Their call.

They're learning that being stupid has a cost in the real world.

When you get right down to it, it's just as correct to say he was expelled for being s stupid, bigoted moron. The class standing for OU probably went up slightly for his being gone.

I don’t listen to rap and would not laugh them off just as I do not expect anyone to laugh off what these frat boys said.

“I hope the president of OU gets sued personally for his hipshot decision to go public on his own with this incident. More and more is coming about about the double standards permitted on his campus, about the raunchy rap group that was previously scheduled but cancelled for example.”

It was not the OU president who put the video on the internet and he did not name the students.

There is nothing he can be sued for and the students he expelled will not sue.

I still don’t think the college has the right to do it and hope he sues them. That’s a slippery slope. Next people will be expelled for conservative or christian free speech.

Obviously the university thinks it does. And I doubt the boys who were expelled will sue. Why would they want to go through the rest of their life known as the guys who sued for the right to yell "n***er" and act like bigoted fools? What company will jump at the chance to hire them any time in the future?

I've been thinking about it. The young adult who released the song was way out of line. If he was offended, he should've spoken to either whomever was responsible or the person leading the chant. But release it when he chose to be involved in a private event? No.

I'm getting more outraged about the over-the-top punishment the longer this goes on. Remember the Ferguson riots all over the country? Here in Cleveland, a bunch of stupid kids from Oberlin came to a protest so blacks wouldn't be shot for nothing or whatever. They whined because a professor wouldn't give them extra time to study for an exam! What punishment did those protestors get who blocked city and communter streets, scared kids just trying to enjoy holiday events, and blocked access to buildings? And what about the looters and burners in Ferguson? Why aren't they all in jail?

No, these kids deserve no punishment. Or, as I suggested, maybe a day or two in an inner city school to get to know people. What they said was stupid, for sure, but it's free speech and it's at a private event. What do you have against freedom of speech?

If the frat boys sue, the will have to testify and make an argument that ““There will never be a nigger SAE/There will never be a nigger SAE/You can hang him from a tree/But he’ll never sign with me/There will never be a nigger SAE.”

I doubt they want to do that.

The hard thing to remember is that the purpose of the 1st Ammendment is not to protect accepted speech. Its purpose is to protect unaccepted speech.

Now if these kids get shunned or if they walk around campus and people yell at them or throw banana peels at them then that’s another story.

But legally they did nothing wrong. They broke no law by riding in a bus probably not even on campus property and privately sang a stupid, offensive rap ditty using the “N” word.

I put to you that if the blacks on campus at OK U stood on the student green and chanted “death to whitey” absolutely nothing would happen.

This is not a Free Speech issue and the students have not been denied any rights under the Constitution.

The person who posted the video on the internet had every right to do so.

However, they will not get on the stand to defend their right to say: . . .

But they have that right. It's political speech with a small "P," however uncharitable. And note that it's being punished for political, rather charitable reasons.

Ask not for which unprotected class, such as "frat boys," the right to free speech is withdrawn. It is withdrawn for thee.

The frat boys have not been denied their right of free speech or any constitutional right.

They are of course free to sue OU, but they would likely lose after taking the stand and making asses of themselves.

“Yeah, but at least he’s not a racist. </sarcasm>”

Is he more or less racist than a man who attends a rally sponsored by the organization behind the Zebra murders? And then praises it in a newspaper interview. That man was elected President.

They've been denied free speech, at a private gathering no less. They didn't commit any crime against anyone.

As far as it being released, as I stated, if a person on that bus was offended, he should've spoken up then. It's pretty low-end that he's invited to participate and chooses to do so, then releases this to the public.

No, I'm NOT approving of the song. I'm defending freedom of speech and privacy.

“They’ve been denied free speech, at a private gathering no less. They didn’t commit any crime against anyone.”

And that would be why they are not being charged with a crime.

No crime was committed and no one is being denied their First Amendment rights.

Racist speech is protected by the First Amendment and they are not violating it unless they threaten a specific individual with bodily harm. Rap lyrics call for killing whitey all the time.
