McDonald's Latest Sales Are Worse Than Expected
Forbes ^ | 9 March 15 | Staff

Posted on 03/09/2015 4:13:51 PM PDT by SkyPilot

McDonald's MCD +0.6% worldwide sales fell a more than expected 1.7% in February, marking nine consecutive months of declines.

This comes a week after new CEO Steve Easterbrook assumed the top job. Easterbrook, who has said he considers himself an ‘internal activist,’ is faced with reviving the lagging sales that cost previous CEO Don Thompson his job.

U.S. sales fell 4%, as the fast food giant continues to face heavy competition from fast casual chains like Chipotle and Panera.

“Consumer needs and preferences have changed,” said the company in a statement. “McDonald’s current performance reflects the urgent need to evolve with today’s consumers, reset strategic priorities and restore business momentum.”

Last week, McDonald’s announced it would start to phase out the use of chickens that are raised with human antibiotics.

Sales in Asia, where the company is still being punished by customers following a food safety scandal last year, declined by 4.4%. “Rebuilding brand trust by strengthening McDonald’s quality and value perceptions is one of APMEA’s top priorities for 2015,” the company said.

Total sales were partially offset by a 0.7% gain in Europe sales, where the company saw strength in the U.K. and Germany but still faces headwinds in Russia.

The 1.7% worldwide sales decline reported by McDonald’s was much worse than estimates of a 0.3% decline, according to analysts polled by research firm Consensus Metrix, and is telling of how much work the company has left to do under Easterbrook. Last month the company reported a 1.8% decline.

Shares of McDonald’s declined 1% to $96.14 in premarket trading and are up 5% over the last 12 months.

I forgot to video that lady selling the chocolate...she sings a song...something...”can you help a person out”....I was going to make a ring tone out of it....she stands right next to the small bank branch across the street from the Chase Tower....they all have their regular spots...

It ain’t safe.

McD's entire problem summed up in three words. I don't know how a fast food company overcomes this tag.

Unsafe. The nutritional value of the food. The sketchy workforce. The many, many stories/videos of customer misbehavior and crime.

It's just not a safe place to go.

Remake the Chicken nuggets and remarket as whole chicken breast deep fried in tallow.

I remember a small McDonalds in Rockville Maryland in the '50s that was supposedly the 2nd McDonalds anywhere. It was a small drive-thru with golden arches. Hamburgers were .15 cents and cheeseburgers .17. There was some deal where you could buy a whole bag for a reduced price. The food was great.

Sometime in the mid-seventies the food at McDonalds changed and I began t get stomach cramps if I ate there. Except for breakfast, I haven't been back to one since.

We have one in Albuquerque, and it’s always jammed. I can’t imagine how it could survive with all the great New Mexican multi-generational hole in the wall restaurants here.

Indeed. Though not exactly fast food, La Placita is one of my favorite eating places. When I was in Albuquerque, I also liked Little Anita's and Monroe's.

I remember eating at a Taco Bell in Socorro which catered to local tastes by offering New Mexico green chile.

Sadly we don’t have Whataburger or In N Out.

But we do have Culvers, which is also quite awesome.

(FWIW the $5.50 was just the basic price of the hamburger)

And that is why I never go near a Chipotle. We have sooooo many really good Mexican places to choose from that it just seems stupid to me to go to a Chipotle. Of course my relatives in Arkansas think Chuy’s is Mexican food. lol I don’t go there either.

McD’s big brakfast, and most other breakfast items are pretty good. After breakfast, the only really good items are the chicken wraps.

Second year (Monk #2): I LIKE oatmeal.

Third year (Monk #3): I can’t stand this constant quibbling about oatmeal!

>>Sadly we don’t have Whataburger or In N Out.<<

That is like saying “I don’t have an old beat-up VW or a Porche.”

I have a WAB around the corner and I can’t stand them. Paper thin patties with no taste and very strange toppings combinations.

InO OTOH — Burger Nirvana (Thank God one is near me when I moved to Texas).

I do miss Carl’s Jr which is in the upper 3rd. And I REALLY miss Tommy’s Chiliburgers — .00001 away from InO.

*dang I am hungry and NONE of those are near where I am in Chicago*

Best iced tea?
Chicken Express

And, you can order a jumbo-size drink and you get a good quart-sized (maybe half-gallon, I forget) bucket to take with you!
