The peace deal for eastern Ukraine reached on Thursday sets clear deadlines for a cease-fire and the withdrawal of heavy weapons, but resolution of the main political and economic issues behind the conflict was made conditional on a series of difficult steps and put off until the end of the year.

The deal made by the leaders of France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine builds on a cease-fire agreement that was reached in September and violated almost immediately.

Here is a look at what they did and did not agree upon, and who won and lost in the process:

Looks like Putin achieved his strategic objectives. Keep Ukraine out of NATO and probably the EU. Make the eastern part a de facto satellite of Russia.

There are not enough backbones in France and Germany to support a jellyfish.

"Peace in Our Time."

Chamberlin and Hitler carved up Czechoslovakian - Hitler was asked to just take half the country. He did. A few months later he simply grabbed the other half.

There is a lot of static in the press as to what exactly was agreed to in this "treaty."

MINSK, Belarus (AP) — Guns would fall silent, heavy weapons would pull back from the front and Ukraine would trade broad autonomy for the east to get back control of its Russian border by the end of 2015 under a peace deal hammered out Thursday in all-night negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany. The deal was full of potential pitfalls that could derail its implementation, however. In announcing the plan, Russia and Ukraine differed over what exactly they had agreed to in the marathon 16-hour talks, including the status of Debaltseve, a key town now under rebel siege.

I don't like it.

Ok, I see France, Germany, Kiev, and the USA in this agreement. Were the rebel areas involved in this? How will it ever work if they weren’t a party to it?

For reasons I'm not clear on, the United States was either not invited or chose not to attend the Minsk Summit. It's just as well. This is a European problem. Let them sort it out for once. It's high time we stop sticking our noses into everything.

Strategically, Putin would be a fool not to secure a land bridge to Crimea, preferably one as wide as possible. If I was Putin, my land bridge would go all the way to the Dnieper River as far north as Kremenchuk. (based on strategic considerations)

Putin gets his toehold in eastern Ukraine - held for him by his proxies - legitimated, and that toehold and Ukraine’s energy needs, and his proxies continued push in eastern Ukraine, will show the people of western Europe their leaders are spineless fools. Putin has not been stopped. He’s been given a legal resting period, after which his push against Ukraine and the Baltic states will resume in strength again.

US not a party to it, not constrained to abide by it.

Putin is going nowhere unless we try again to get another country bordering Russia to join the EU or NATO.
