Rob Konrad, a former six-year Miami Dolphins fullback, survived a boating accident in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday night by swimming nine miles to shore, the Coast Guard said.
According to multiple reports, Konrad, who was said to be fishing alone off the coast of South Florida, fell from his 36-foot boat, which had been operating on autopilot.
Petty Officer Mark Barney of U.S. Coast Guard told ABC News that Konrad was in the water for 10 to 12 hours.

And his gun collection?
once a dolphin always a dolphin. no wonder he made it a dolphin is not going to drown from a boating mishap.
A true American..... can do....,.
why would a Dolphin need a flotation device? (nyuk, nyuk)
Well played, FReeper! But I think the boat continued on without the driver aboard. Contraband will be discovered. He failed to scuttle the ship!
Impressive swim though. He must be in pretty good shape.
And some poor Cuban drifting on his inner tube looks up to see an empty fishing boat trolling by....
a free boat is out there somewhere ???
Except his skin is all wrinkly from so long in salt water.
I flew SAR with the Coast Guard out of Miami..Its tough out there in the day light. The guy done good and was obviously in good shape.Good for him....
Wonder where the boat is?
Really good shape, 9 miles is a ton of swimming.
9 miles in ocean currents to boot. He may have done more just to keep on the land track. Or the current could have helped him.
His biggest concern was shrinkage.
And up to 12 hours in the water will bring on hypothermia.
I’m a land-lubber myself - so I can only guess he could see the shore 9 miles away to know which direction to swim?
9 miles of swimming in the ocean is 100% badass.
Wait...didn’t I hear that playing football is really bad for you?
(Someone crunched the data and found that retired football players are on the whole healthier than the population in general.)
Swim or die, easy choice. I’m glad he had the strength to get back to shore.
