Rob Konrad, a former six-year Miami Dolphins fullback, survived a boating accident in the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday night by swimming nine miles to shore, the Coast Guard said.

According to multiple reports, Konrad, who was said to be fishing alone off the coast of South Florida, fell from his 36-foot boat, which had been operating on autopilot.

Petty Officer Mark Barney of U.S. Coast Guard told ABC News that Konrad was in the water for 10 to 12 hours.

Well played, FReeper! But I think the boat continued on without the driver aboard. Contraband will be discovered. He failed to scuttle the ship!

Impressive swim though. He must be in pretty good shape.

9 miles in ocean currents to boot. He may have done more just to keep on the land track. Or the current could have helped him.

His biggest concern was shrinkage.

And up to 12 hours in the water will bring on hypothermia.

I’m a land-lubber myself - so I can only guess he could see the shore 9 miles away to know which direction to swim?

Wait...didn’t I hear that playing football is really bad for you?

(Someone crunched the data and found that retired football players are on the whole healthier than the population in general.)

Swim or die, easy choice. I’m glad he had the strength to get back to shore.
