He said he wants to make the first 2 years of community college free...Community colleges only offer a 2 year degree.

Just another way to devalue a 4-year degree and further disenfranchise recent college grads for whom there are no jobs.

When education is really “free”, who’s going to do the teaching?

So then a community college degree will be meaningless. It will have the value of a high school diploma for hiring purposes.

2 years of college?!
Only 2?!
Make it 4...no wait, 8, no 20 years of free college!
I also want a free house, free car (Lexus is acceptable).
And Kobe beef every day.
And a living wage....a minimum wage of oh, $100 per hour would be a good start.
And I want...and....and also.....
I am the Free Sh*t Army!
EVERYTHING should free!

He’s already got control of K through 12 with Common Core. This is how he will take over community colleges, too. Community colleges, you know...the ones in your neighborhood?

Wait a minute, isn’t community college 2 years in total?

This is pie in the sky if I’ve ever heard of it!

There is a little problem of federalism involved here. Last time I checked, the federal government is not in the community college business.

Spanish-speaking immigrants.

With tattoos on their faces.

Largey symbolic.
Anybody with low income or on any public welfare program or with a nummber of other ‘needs’ can just put their X or paw print on a simple “Board of Governors’ Fee Waiver Program” form and, as the title implies, get a free ride. At some schools the majority of students get this.
Beyond that, there are many scholarships, grants, and work study opportunities — plus of course the “soon-to-have-repayments-forgiven-by-Obama” student loan program for much more funding assistance. And a whole office full of expert staffers all paid by the taxpayers to give away all these goodies.
(Not to mention that community college fees are almost always kept very low to begin with, so that even the students from the most wealthy families only pay a small fraction of the costs of their courses, with the taxpayers picking up the larger part anyway.)
Conclusion: a swell-sounding headline-grabber (otherwise known as a ‘political stunt’).
NOW if the high schools would turn out kids who could actually READ (above the 7th grade level, as today’s news cycle reveals is the norm nowadays for HS ‘graduates’)...
that would help students succeed in the community colleges a WHOLE LOT MORE than any newfangled “fee assistance” program layered on top of all the rest of the “fee assistance or waiver” programs.
Reform High School (at the local level, none of this is any of the Federales’ proper concern anyway).
IMHO.

Let’s see...to go half-tiime to community college in my county costs $918 a semester. It’s a high wage county, so even a burger flipper job will pay $10. So if you’re even willing to work an extra 10 hours a week at almost anything, you can more than cover that cost. Sure, it’s not easy, but what’s wrong with working hard for what you want?

But you probably wouldn’t have to pay that much if you were working a low-wage job. The community college offers financial aid. If you can’t figure out a way to pay for a community college, you’re too lazy to go to college. Sorry to be blunt.
