President Barack Obama on Friday will propose making two years of community college free for students.

In a White House video posted Thursday evening, Obama said he wanted to offer “a little preview” of his plans for the Jan. 20 State of the Union address.

“What I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everybody who’s willing to work for it,” Obama said. “It’s something we can accomplish, and it’s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anybody in the world.”

The proposal would make two years of community college free for students with a C+ average who attend school at least half-time and who are making “steady progress” toward their degree.

I saw a post on CNN about this - all sorts of idiots praising Obam the Great for giving this to the county. Not a single person asked how the hell it was going to be paid -

How about improving the economy and the job market so the kids who graduate college can actually find a job.

He is going to propose a LOT of freebies knowing Congress won’t pass any of them and he and dems can blame Republicans

There is no such thing as FREE. Somebody pays for it. The buildings, books, instructors, utilities....all of that costs real money.

Don’t worry Boehner will give Obama all the Blank Cheques he needs

Actually, using California as a test case, I would like to see four free years of online instruction leading to bachelors degrees, accompanied by the abolition of the redundant and sinecure-riddled California State University system and the absorption of two or three of its flagship campuses into the UC system, the rest being demoted to community colleges.

Watch all the soon-to-be-unemployed Gender Studies professors go insane over that one. :)

Free??? We’re broke, we’re taxed to death. Are we asking the kids to slip on bracelets that do nothing more than make them slaves of the state, bought and paid for?

There’s a wonderful photo in the Times, I think yesterday, of all the new congresspeople having a grand old time, partying away and congratulating one another, and a little boy in the foreground looking straight at the camera, as if to say “Are they thinking about my future?” I longed to put a cartoon bubble over his head but don’t have the know-how.

>>>for everybody who’s willing to work for it<<< LOL

Who would that be? Obama cancelled the Clinton Era Welfare to Work Program the minute he walked into the White House.

Nothing in life is free. It may be included, but it isn’t free. I’ll bet Obama isn’t paying for it, but I and every other Taxpayer will end up paying for it.

The idiot in chief is at it again. Can’t lead our nation to greatness by doing what is necessary, which is to get out of the way of people who get things done. Instead, he’s the village idiot who is always getting in the way and tripping up everyone else! Arghh!

If he truly wants to help kids, then help them in the early years in elementary and middle school. Dump the politics and sex ed crap. Teach them the 3R’s so that by the time they are in high school they’re achieving A’s and B’s. Community College is too late, and the losers are beyond fixing (unless they truly want to change and do it on their own). That’s reality.

No problem. Not your fault. Obviously both of you posted at the same time. Just letting the mods know it is the same source to lessen the clutter. I’ve had mine yanked that were hours apart, but some mods don’t care I guess.

“...the first two years of community college free for everybody who’s willing to work for it...”

Would that be similar to motivating themselves to get jobs and pay for it themselves, thus eliminating the gov’t middleman?
