Senate battles fuel Cruz coalition
Houston Chronicle ^ | December 15, 2014 | By Kevin Diaz

WASHINGTON - Stepping into an elevator on his way out of the U.S. Capitol Friday night, Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell - the next Senate Majority Leader - bid reporters farewell. "See you Monday," he said.

By agreement with Democrats, a budget showdown risking a potential government shutdown had been pushed back a couple of days, creating breathing room for senators in both parties while they made plans for a pre-holiday weekend.

Sen. Ted Cruz had other ideas.

In a maneuver that would put the junior Republican senator from Texas at the center of another high-stakes political drama, Cruz pressed a constitutional point of order to block funding for President Barack Obama's executive action on immigration.

The move, dismissed as futile by leaders in both parties, ignited an instant uproar in the halls of Congress, further burnishing Cruz's image as a tea party firebrand less concerned with pragmatic lawmaking than ideological warfare.

While the political wisdom of Cruz's action will long be debated, veteran GOP strategists said there is little doubt it would play well to the conservative base he needs to cultivate if he runs for president in 2016. At the same time, analysts say it could further damage his prospects for working to advance a constructive agenda with a new Republican leadership intent on shedding Congress' image of dysfunction.

"What's bad for him in Washington is good for him everywhere he needs to win to be the GOP nominee," said Steve Deace, a syndicated radio host based in Iowa, the first-in-the-nation presidential caucus state. "I don't think there are enough words in the English language that adequately describe how much Washington, D.C., is hated by everyone outside Washington, D.C."

(Louisiana’s Cassidy should be renamed Judas, for betraying his voters less than a week after his election.)

Ut oh....what did he do?? I’ve been out all day and am not up on all of the latest. I did read where he’s already gotten four (I think) high profile committee assignments.

You need to remove Gowdy from your image.

If you research Gowdy's pronouncements, you will discover that he is extremely weak on illegal immigration. He is not for doing anything other than granting full Amnesty to the illegal criminal invading hoards.

Gowdy is a great disappointment.

When the press hates you and the leadership of both parties hate you, but the voters like you, you’re probably doing the right thing.

This is the only one that I'd even consider voting for. Aside from Cruz, the rest aren't even worth a sidewards glance and I'd never vote for them.

Think TX native Jebbie would win the TX primary against native Canadian Cruz, but I wish it were not so.

Sure. Jeb's Yankee born father, NYC born Mother and Mexican Born wife will have Texans clamoring for the Florida resident.

It’s sad to see liberals and the media being so bigoted against a major Hispanic leader ;)

I disagree. Many Texans are VERY happy with Mr. Cruz and how he represents us in Congress. Jeb isn’t a Texan, never was, never will be.

I don’t think so.

Jebbie is tainted as an establishment RINO.

Cruz is a known fighter...for We the People.

“At the same time, analysts say it could further damage his prospects for working to advance a constructive agenda with a new Republican leadership ...”

I don’t want a constructive new agenda from this leadership. I want a lot of votes that force RINO’s and D’s into impossibly unpopular votes and Obama into unpopular vetos. Nothing constructive will get done in the next two years with Obama wielding the veto pen.

But “constructive solutions” will put us further down the road of tyranny.

RE Cruz in 2016:

Yeah... I’m pretty much there too.

Although I do think a Governor like Scott Walker in the topkick slot, with Ted as VP would work better.

Cruz and Alan West would be a nice combination too.

Every elected official has one duty: get reelected. I am suspicious of the bunch and I think we make a massive mistake in looking for some 2nd Coming Politician. America’s ills aren’t going to be cured by Cruz, Gowdy, Lee, Walker, etc. They’ll be cured by Americans taking back their God-given rights and shrinking the Leviathan. If that doesn’t happen, then there won’t be enough “heroes”.

I am actually optimistic about the Millenials. They’re already very conservative in many ways and learning more everyday.

Until Americans take back God, rotsa ruck “taking back their God-given ‘rights’” (which all depend on God’s grace)

More than anyone else on the current scene, Ted Cruz exposes the bipartisan "ruling class" by eliciting their common reactions against him.
