Two Mystery Illnesses Linked to 12 Child Deaths; 94 Paralysis Cases Since August

In the span of four months, at least 94 children in 33 U.S. states have developed a devastating form of paralysis with symptoms similar to polio. Some require a ventilator to breathe. And some of the greatest government health minds in the country say they have no idea what’s causing it.

At the same time, during the past four months, at least 12 children have died after falling ill with a respiratory virus called Enterovirus D-68 (EV-D68). Again, federal health officials are at a loss to explain the origin of the epidemic.

Are the mysterious outbreaks linked?

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has given the perplexing paralysis cases a new name: acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). And although it has been the subject of a series of national alerts, it’s not been widely covered in the national news media.

Both the AFM paralysis and the EV-D68 respiratory virus infections occur primarily in children.

...

Specialists in California where many of the paralyzed children were diagnosed suspected EV-D68 almost immediately. Two of the first five paralyzed patients were said to have tested positive for EV-D68.

Furthermore, Dr. Teri Schreiner of Children’s Hospital in Colorado recently referred to EV-D68 as “the suspected pathogen” in paralysis cases. And Dr. Benjamin Greenberg of University of Texas Southwestern said the theory of a link was “substantiated by significant evidence”—something CDC seemed reluctant to publicly acknowledge.

If the two are linked, it’s unclear why some children infected with EV-D68 respiratory virus go on to develop crippling paralysis. Since mid-August, the CDC has reported 1,149 serious cases of EV-D68 in 48 states. The actual count is likely higher since CDC doesn’t require states to report EV-D68 illnesses.

Link to Illegal Immigrant Children?

If I remember correctly, not that long ago, a great number of “RIGHT WING” posters on FR predicted that exactly this would happen when countless thousands of CHILDREN from the 5th world were admitted to the USA, and scattered across the nation.
No inoculation such as those REQUIRED of ALL children born here. Various diseases unseen and unknown in the United States, but that was OK.
Who was right? The “compassionate LEFT” or the very concerned Freepers?

AFAIK, there is no vaccine for Enterovirus D-68 (EV-D68).

There is also no real evidence I’ve seen of a link between these cases and the immigrant “children.”

Perfectly willing to accept that there is a link, just would like to see evidence of one.

Oh, they know full well the origin of the epidemic. That's why the government has been treating the destinations of the immigrant "children" as a state secret. If the destinations were revealed the origin of the epidemic would be immediately made clear.

Sherman, read this editorial and at least consider what would be considered strong circumstantial evidence.

At the time the rare disease caseload skyrocketed over a wide geographic area in a very short period of time, the only real vector was the distribution of large numbers of illegal immigrant children who had been given little, if any medical screening over that same area.

It is highly unlikely that all those (US) children had had something in common to cause exposure to a rare virus at the same time.

Instead of the American kids going to the virus (a common point source), it is more likely the virus was distributed to them.

For those who will not bother with the link, the following quote from the article I linked shows the significance of the increase in the number of cases:

It is true that EV-D68 has been in the U.S. at least since 1962. But according to a study done by doctors from the Division of Viral Diseases at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases published on the CDC's own website, EV-D68 "is one of the most rarely reported serotypes, with only 26 reports throughout the 36-year study period (1970 through 2006)."

The current outbreak, over 47 US States and parts of Canada, represents an increase of over 1000 times previous cases/year.

True. However, I have not seen any evidence that this disease is at all common in Central America.

So what we have is a coincidence in time. May or may not be a causal link.

Many, many things also happened during that time, including lots of things of which we are not aware. Would like to see epidemoilogical evidence. Which may be kept secret by the government, of course.

To spout a cliche, correlation does not prove causation.

Yes and as long as Diane Fienstien and her Obama pals keep ‘torture’ in the news, we don’t hear a peep about these ‘chldren’.

There is some mechanism resulting in such a wide and rapid distribution. I hope somebody’s doing good epidemiology on it.

Seen that one before. Somebody would to interpret it for me as to what it means as far as prevalence in Central America vs.US and other countries.

News of the viral outbreaks seems to have been suppressed (as well as where all these children went). I remember reading a news report of 540 children hospitalized in Ohio in one weekend. All the reports seemed to vanish after that shocking number.
