Man Dies During Traffic Stop From Asthma Attack as Cop Refuses to Let them Drive to Hospital
The Free Thought Project ^ | December 13, 2014 | Matt Agorist

Chippewa Falls, WI — Dashcam video has been released that shows the disturbing last moments of a man’s life as he’s detained by a Chippewa Falls police officer on the way to the hospital.

29-year-old Casey Kressin died after suffering a severe asthma attack when the vehicle that was rushing him to the hospital was pulled over by a Chippewa Falls police officer.

After they were stopped, Kressin’s girlfriend immediately starts to beg the officer to take him to the hospital. The officer instead calls for an ambulance.

The couple was just 3 miles from the hospital when they were stopped. It took over 6 minutes for the ambulance to arrive.

During the stop, the officer callously listens to the begging couple’s pleas for help as Kressin slips further away. “He’s going to die! He can’t breathe!” screams Kressin’s girlfriend. We can hear Kressin begging for help as he falls to the ground, starving for air, “I can’t breathe…..I can’t breathe.”

The officer just stares at the couple, telling them to wait for the ambulance. By the time the ambulance arrives, it takes another 2 and 1/2 minutes before Kressin begins his journey to the hospital; sadly too much time had passed. Police say Kressin became unresponsive at that time and was pronounced dead at Saint Joseph’s Hospital.

Chippewa Falls Chief Wendy Stelter says she stands behind the officers who responded, saying that Kressin’s girlfriend should not have been allowed to drive the rest of the way because she was hysterical.

However, she was only hysterical because her boyfriend was dying and being kept from life saving treatment that could have saved his life.

The couple was just 3 miles from the hospital when they were stopped. It took over 6 minutes for the ambulance to arrive.

The ambulance arrived and the person received treatment in six minutes.

By the time the ambulance arrives, it takes another 2 and 1/2 minutes before Kressin begins his journey to the hospital

The story leaves out that the person receives treatment in an ambulance.

Hands up don't shoot.

It's a tough call for both the police man and the driver.

zero tolerance policing.

in past times cops would drive ahead of their car with sirens going, or take them in their vehicles, to a hospital.

she should have kept’going, and got arrested at the hospital. then fought it in court, if the cop didn’t shoot her before arresting her.

The EMT guys wouldn't or couldn't apply appropriate measures by the time they arrived, and it was probably too late anyway.

What treatments did they not provide?

A quick review of the cop's dash cam shows NO TRAFFIC in any direction. The popo was WAY outta line. His boss - WORSE.

Should you be able to afford it, please buy a clue; for your own good..

In the old days I can remember trying to treat asthma patients and having the blow off valve pop off on the bag valve mask because trying force O2 into the patients lungs.

Now days we ask early in the game if they have ever had a tube down their throat (yea I know trach). If the answer is yes things start in motion.

With our current protocols, we are saving many asthmatics that would have died in the past and will die outside of our protocols.

Which was about two minutes two late (from the collapse shown on the video). And Casey got the wrong treatment.

The girlfriend did him no favors driving him, should have called 911 in the beginning. He might have lived.

"It's a tough call for both the police man and the driver. "

The Dash Cam looks like it is the middle of the freaking night. Does the cop know where the hospital is? Can he perform deductive reasoning?

Didn't think so.

That’s what I hate about cops. They know everything, you know nothing and are presumed to be a liar. EVERY TIME. There is no talking to a cop, you are automatically guilty, you know, because they have a “tough” job and deal with scumbags all day. It never occurred to me that I must be one of those scumbags, even though I am a law abiding citizen.

What ever happened to “follow my police car, I’ll run my siren and red lights and we’ll be at the hospital safely in about 4 minutes” ????

This one needs to be re-posted. :)

Just a side note (on the government in general front): The EPA banned the good stuff for asthma inhalers (eeeevil CFCs) in 2012. It was predicted that people would die from the new regulations. Wonder if this had a bearing on this case?

Yeah, this is absolutely the problem. In over six decades, I have had exactly ONE positive encounter with a police officer. ONE, and I am always respectful and deferential to the police.

I have actually had a cop pull me over in the middle of the night for no reason whatsoever, and ask if they could look in my car, then detain me for 45 minutes when I asked, "What is your probable cause?"

Outside Lewistown PA, about 15 years ago I had a cop literally scream in my face for five minutes because I pulled into the passing lane to allow him to merge onto the freeway.

When my vehicle was broken into and my tapedeck, tape and computer equipment were stolen, I was advised by a helpful policeman that filing a police report would just be a waste of his time, and instead a better course of action would be to "pray for sickle cell anemia."

I was pulled over for a field sobriety test that held my son and me up for a half hour. I asked if I was driving erratically or something and was told that I was driving in a college town at 2:15 AM, and that was reasonable suspicion enough. When I asked the cop for his badge number, he actually pulled out one of his business cards and threw it in my face.

People are predisposed to believe the worst of cops -- on a conservative forum no less -- because they're constantly doing this kind of crap. Thankfully, I've never had to rely on a cop in a life threatening situation.

What treatments did they not provide?

They weren't giving him oxygen. They may not have been allowed to give epidrine (adrenaline) injections. They probably did not have a nebulizer.

I now drive slightly below the speed limit. I have NO desire to encounter a “Peace” Officer ever again.
