NYPD rookie calls fatal shooting of unarmed man an ‘accident’

A rookie cop working the most dangerous beat in the city killed a man in an unlit housing-project stairwell in Brooklyn — firing off an “accidental” shot that hit a young father in the chest, authorities said Friday.

“It was a pitch-black hallway,” Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said of the Thursday-night shooting at East New York’s Louis Pink Houses. “The deceased is a total innocent.”

With his gun in his left hand and a flashlight in his right, Liang entered the stairwell at the same time Akai Gurley, 28, and his girlfriend, Melissa Butler, walked into the same stairwell on the seventh floor.

The stairs were dark because of a busted light that had been out for three weeks, and Liang was startled by the couple’s presence, sources said. He popped off one round, hitting Gurley in the chest from 10 to 12 feet away.

How long until the cop’s inevitable acquittal?

Involuntary manslaughter at a minimum. He knew better than to put his finger on the trigger.

The chief said this ““It was a pitch-black hallway,” .

Cops cannot clear the field in front of them, and then go find out what it was, cops have to start taking more risks, the citizen death count from clearing the area shootings is just too high.

The cop needs to be fired and charged. Easily startled, with his finger on the trigger, and pops off a round. When it comes to a life, he should have been more careful and kept his finger off the trigger until the target is identified as a threat. What if it were a child? Doesn’t matter, an innocent life was lost.

Red Hook section of Brooklyn is now regarded as notoriously dangerous?
I thought it was populated mostly hipsters who drink too much expensive coffee?

The NYPD’s current authorized uniformed strength is 34,450.[7] There are also approximately 4,500 Auxiliary Police Officers, 5,000 School Safety Agents, 2,300 Traffic Enforcement Agents, and 370 Traffic Enforcement Supervisors currently employed by the department

do they all get a freebie??

This was a cop, so finger on the trigger is part of the job description, especially in the high crime neighborhood. Of course, the lynchmob wants some blood, so the cop might get sacrificed.

a cop killed an innocent man and you think this is about a lynchmob? He should be in prison.

Please tell me how you “accidentally” pull the trigger on your service revolver - in a dark hallway, when you cannot identify your target, nor any others who may be in the line of fire, and nor do you have any threat made against you? So this a-hole just pops off a cap in the dark - because he was “afraid of the dark”? This is one more example of why I hate cops. The damn fools being hired today have neither the brains nor the moral fiber to be police officers.

My goodness...who seriously walks around on a darkened staircase with his finger engaged on the trigger?
One could just as easily inadvertently bobble a step and shoot himself in the leg, for crying out loud.
Keep fingers off the trigger until ready to shoot!

We don't, but cops are special.

Oh PULEASE!

Give me a break!

Maybe if one of your own get taken out by some fool with a badge and no brains, you then might think differently.

The Louis Pink houses are in East New York, not Red Hook. East New York is most certainly notoriously dangerous.

Walking around with a finger on the trigger is absolutely NOT “part of the job description.”

You really outta see these trigger happy cops in NYC; petite women standing 5 feet, effeminate Asian men, and you name it. They walk up to with their hands on the trigger, because you could literally slap the taste outta their mouth. Scared, ignorant, poor, feeble, and sad. Truly, NYC cops are the bottom of the barrel.
