Traffic stop in Newport Beach leads to seizure of 7 assault rifles [Full Auto],
Orange County Register ^ | 11/20/2014 | Scott Schwebke

Posted on 11/20/2014 7:01:59 AM PST by Loud Mime

NEWPORT BEACH – Two people were in the Orange County Jail this week, after police stopped them in a van with automatic rifles and ammunition.

The van contained seven AK-47 assault rifles, six 30-round high-capacity 7.62 caliber magazines, two 10-round magazines and more than 350 rounds of 7.62 caliber ammunition inside, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

Manzella said the arrests are significant because of the weapons seized. All of the guns were modified to fire in fully automatic mode, and one had a barrel less than 16 inches in length in violation of California state law, she said. One of the AK-47 rifles had been reported stolen in Georgia.

I bet a couple of things are involved here. The Mexican dude likely has some interesting tats. MS-13? I’d bet they are followers of Santa Muerte. That may really be why the cops pulled them over, they mau have had an amulet hanging off their rear view mirror or some other image of Santa Muerte on their car or maybe a statue on the dash. The narco/gangster/traffickers really think they are invisible to law enforcement when they do so.

They were likely pretty wasted at the time. I’m glad they did not open up on the officer that pulled them over. This could have turned out very bad for him and everyone around him.

Another possibility, having read the article.

These guys are thieves and this is their latest haul. Where the Kalashnikovs came from will be the interesting development. Look for SWAT raid with ATF and DEA support real soon now.

7.62mm magazine? Uh no, it’s 7.62x39mm.

In the US, when someone says 7.62mm, they are usually talking about 7.62x51mm NATO (aka .308 Winchester) as opposed to the 7.62x39mm the AK-47/AKM uses, the 7.62x54Rmm the Mosin/RPD/PSL/SVD uses, 7.62x33mm (aka .30 cal) the M1/M2 Carbine uses, or the other pistols and rifles designed for a 7.62mm diameter barrel.

Something seems odd about this entire case. They had all those rifle (some FA) but only 6 magazines?

I think this turned federal in a hurry.

I was a juror a few years back in a federal case involving a full auto M-16, a suppressed .22 pistol and loads of ammo. It was interesting.

Now that's funny right there, I don't care who you are! Every single one of those guns were illegal under California law and all but the 10 round magazines. This just emphasizes that you should never hire meth heads to deliver your illegal full auto weapons.

“Of course, LE are exempt because somehow, they’re more “trustworthy”...ha!”

Yeah, like one of our State’s “finest” from the CHP office in Dublin who is being tried for downloading “naked photos” from females cell phones who he was in the process of booking for DUI, then “sharing” them with his fellow officers around the state. He’s facing as much as 8 years. But his “buddies” are not going to be prosecuted for “receiving” the photos. Nice to know that they have time for this $hit. Go figure!

None of these laws seemed to stop this couple.

Amzing how that worked out, huh? How is that, anyhow. Those laws are supposed to work!

Well, the net result of creating a black market for a lucrative product is always the same. TThere is some variance in the degree of violence - usually a function of how the black market functions - but since you can’t turn to courts to adjucate differences, then threats, intimidation and violence are used instead.

8 years?...not enough time behind bars for violating the public trust and his position.

The rest, at a minimum, should be fired.

Honestly, the difference between a semi-auto AK rifle and full auto, is a different trigger group. You can only BUY a semi-auto trigger group, but if you start from a “parts kit”, the original trigger group is there.

Building an AK rifle, the FIRST step of compliance is removing, and preferably destroying, the original trigger parts. Sledgehammers is just fine for that: one hit and it’s unusable. . .

“...but the violence in Mexico is a function of our prohibition of drugs.”

The violence in Mexico arises from official corruption which has been with Mexico long before the drug war. Before the drug war it was politics - communism. Recently 48 protesting students were arrested by police and then murdered by thugs after a politician called for them to be silenced.

Simple as a paper clip slipped between the right side wall of the receiver just next to and behind the trigger to arrest the seer.

According to testimony by the ATF a piece of string or a paper clip can qualify as a “machine gun”.

Well said!

I predict that the California legislators will create another set of laws to punish 16” inch or less full auto weapons in the next session and another round of gun control measures to ensure that Criminals will not brake California gun laws anymore. As if with the stroke of a pen all human ills would vanish.

Heh, there’s a lot of ‘background’ information they’re not releasing on those two.

If I were a betting man - other than a friendly $5 wager - I’d bet that the case quietly disappears down a ‘legal rat hole’ after their court appearance/arraignment. Used to be (1980s) a lot of private machine/car shops around HB for high-end mechanics to service all the big bucks exotic cars. I’m thinking they had the AK mods done locally and the LEOs don’t want it to become a major news story.
