Child exploitation is a hidden crime, and offences at home are the biggest concern, says Norfolk chief constable Simon Bailey.
There will be more Rotherham-style child sexual exploitation scandals unearthed in the coming months as the stone is lifted on the scale of abuse perpetrated on the young, one of Britains top police officers has warned.
In an interview with the Guardian, Simon Bailey, chief constable of Norfolk police, who is the leading officer concerned with child abuse within the Association of Chief Police Officers, said that sex crimes involving children had for too long been a hidden crime.
He also sparked a clash with fellow professionals by calling on teachers and doctors to take on more responsibility over detecting signs of abuse.
Bailey warned that the scale of the problem was far larger than previously thought, with the latest research estimating that the number of children suffering sexual abuse at some point in their childhood could be as high as 600,000. We dont know for sure. But I think its tens of thousands of victims [a year] of an appalling crime.
The senior officers comments come as the police reel from a series of reports which cast forces as at best complacent over the issue of child sex abuse, and at worst as being wilfully blind to victims pleas.
In August Alexis Jay, a professor and former social worker, found that gangs of mainly Asian men had groomed, terrorised and abused 1,400 girls, some as young as 11, in Rotherham over a 16-year period.

In other words, the British Constabulary wants to divert attention from the rape of kuffar as a means of jihad and pretend the problem is incestuous parents, uncles, older brothers, bad baby-sitters and other isolated sources of child sex abuse, rather than what the British media likes to call "Asian sex grooming gangs".
And yet there are Freepers who insist that if the pedophiles are addicted to drugs or booze we all just have to love them and forgive them. Perverts are people too.
Kumbaya and stuff.
Muhammed was a child rapist. So there’s no problem.
Who thought otherwise?
Officials from across the country are looking the other way while this happens, shame on them all!
Asian men? What part of Asia? I mean, Asia's a big place...
Gimme a hint... were they Buddhists? Christians? Hindus? Shintos? Zoroastrians?
Hmmmm...
All the offenders should be chained together at the neck and with hands cuffed behind their backs. Then push them one at a time off the bow deck of a ship at sea. Just be sure it is a minimum of 200 miles from any land. Those who make it to land are free to go....to prison for life.
In England this kind of child abuse is becoming a normal part of “growing up.”
Perverts are people, too. We must love them on their island in the South Atlantic where they should be sent in order to keep them away from the hateful pervertophobes.
Bahai, surely. They are a pernicious bunch.
If they are chained together then you don’t have to push them one at a time.
Yup. It’s ‘’diversity’’ you know. Celebrate diversity.
Muslims won’t be happy about this “religious persecution.”
This might go a long way in explaining why white boys don’t perform up to par in England. Homo Pedos really mess up many of the young men they attack. I am assuming that white girls have the benefit of the feminist movement to protect them as they do here, however in England, from what I have read, Muslims target white girls and the Muslim card outplays the Feminist card all day long.
As well we should.
Love them, forgive them. Then, after following God's Law, we should follow man's law.
Arrest them, prosecute them, convict the guilty.
Hyperbole much?.
