Eric Frein sightings: How 'wilderness ninja' has outfoxed 1,000 cops
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | Oct. 21, 2014 | Patrik Jonsson

Two fresh sightings of alleged sniper Eric Frein has resulted in more closed public schools in northern Pennsylvania and a shift in a massive manhunt to near where Mr. Frein went to high school – and where he was a member of the high school rifle team.

The pressing question of how a single man has outmaneuvered 1,000 trained law enforcement officers in the Pocono Mountains for over five weeks suggests that Frein has used a home-field advantage, long-term planning, and survival skills to resemble a “wilderness ninja,” a term some use to describe a rare breed of native scouts who can, in essence, morph into shadows.

But while true native scouts are bulwarks for good, Frein has “gone to the dark side,” says Shane Hobel, the founder of the Mountain Scout Survival School in New York’s Hudson Valley.

“This guy is on a totally different parallel [than a native scout] but it is a parallel,” says Mr. Hobel. “That makes him a dangerous individual, and the fact that he’s got sniper capability makes it even more dangerous.”

Pennsylvania licensed about 800,000 resident "snipers" in 2013.

Send in the dogs.

So far I hear a LOT about hordes of police on overtime using all manner of taxpayer-funded high tech gadgetry which has earned them ZERO advantage.

Nothing low-tech like “blood hounds.”

Time for something different.

““You want to find an outlaw, hire an outlaw. You want to find a Dunkin’ Donuts, call a cop.””

Yah, I’m not getting why he hasn’t been run to ground yet. Cops should ask for some blood hounds from Louisiana or Mississippi prison system to track him down. Would be over in a day or two.

“That’s what all the hub bub is about? Man sized target at 100 meters? I’ll put 28 rounds rapid fire into that all day long.”

Don’t know about the rapid fire part. But, do agree that a 100 yd shot is not a challenging shot for any experienced hunter, especially if equipped with a good quality rifle and scope setup.

i don’t think i would be doing any hunting within 50 miles of where they are searching! I’m sure they will shoot on site at anyone holding a long gun and wearing camo : /

sniper capability?
A 500 yd shot is a pretty good shot. A 1000 yd shot is a great shot.
Shooting from the dark woods into a lighted building from 100yds is not “sniper capability”.
That's what all the hub bub is about? Man sized target at 100 meters? I'll put 28 rounds rapid fire into that all day long.

Don't our US Marines typically shoot at up to 500 yards range?

"It's still unclear what drives Frein's anti-government and anti-police philosophy"

Not that I agree with his reaction, but I could think of a few reasons without too much trouble

wearing camo : /...Don’t wear camo in PA. You’ll lose your firearm and get fined like hell.

Any caves in the search area? Good for suppressing thermal signature. Probably also has signals intelligence on the searchers with handheld police scanner. Maybe other toys like night vision capability. Who knows how long he was planning this and what supplies he has laid into how many hiding spots.

The leaves will be off the trees soon and there will be snow on the ground for better contrast.

strange laws compared to hear in Va....can wear whatever as long as.you got some blaze orange on that can be seen all way around...and blaze orange is only mandatory during rifle season but not bow or muzzle loader....NO camo when hunting? that is some crazy sh!t

That’ sorta my point. Cops should not shoot if they see any blaze. Blaze will not be on Frieden. Blaze may or may not be required for bowhunting, (I KNOW it is required for dove hunting), but nobody should be cop suicided if they have blaze on.

Agree. There’s only so much wilderness, the police aren’t going anywhere, and get to return to their own homes at night. He doesn’t.

“But, do agree that a 100 yd shot is not a challenging shot for any experienced hunter, especially if equipped with a good quality rifle and scope setup.”

Simo Häyhä, a Finnish sniper during the 1939 Winter War against Stalinist Russia, is credited with more than 600 kills using only iron sights on a Mosin–Nagant. No scope. Häyhä refused to use a scope for fear that a wayward sunlight glint off the glass might give his position away.

In the old days a dozen bloodhounds would have been on the trail and would have found him in short order.

Being a sniper doesn’t require the use of a scope. However, all other things being equal a shooter using a scope will beat a shooter not using a scope. Just a side note; I went through boot camp at Fort Polk in 1965 and it still had the old KD ranges for marksmanship training. The farthest distance we shot at was 600 yards with M-14’s. The bull (I think) was one foot in diameter. And, I punched it pretty good, shot sharp shooter, not sniper quality but decent.
