Troops from the 101st Airborne Division leading the military response to Ebola in West Africa will only need gloves and masks to protect themselves from the deadly virus, so said Gen. David Rodriguez at a Pentagon briefing Wednesday.
“They don’t need the whole suit – as such – because they’re not going to be in contact with any of the people,” the commander of U.S. troops in Africa said.
Soldiers from the 101st Airborne will primarily be building hospitals, ultimately leading what could be a contingent of 4,000 American service members. They’ll be housed either in tent cities at military airfields or in Liberian Ministry of Defense facilities, Rodriguez said.
Soldiers’ health will be monitored through surveys and taking their temperature on their way in and out of camps. If a service member does get sick, Rodriguez said they will be flown home immediately for treatment.
Next week, the 101st Airborne will hold a traditional pre-deployment ceremony, known as a “color casing”, before departing for Liberia, though a handful of soldiers are already on the ground.

There was a time, when duty was understood as a two way phenomenon. Those who volunteered to defend America were owed a reciprocal duty from those in American Government. This is an outright betrayal of that reciprocal duty.

That’s what I think as well. The Commander-in-Chief should be protective of the lives and health of his men.
Can I ask why we are sending the military to Africa to deal with Ebola?
I’m all in favor of humanitarian aid and medical aid and all that. But should the military be involved in such an effort, that’s the question I wonder about. Is our military set up to do this; do they have expertise and training in dealing with disease epidemics??
Everyone in the US armed forces is a volunteer, as there is no draft or conscription. They didn’t volunteer for this mission, though, if that’s what you mean. It doesn’t work that way.
Do we even HAVE a hot-weather variety of MOPP gear ???
Back in the day (1980s), with protective gear, it was a choice between the agent and heat stroke.
I remember that the “time of effective consciousness” in Aviator CBW gear was between 90 and 120 minutes. . .

This president uses the excuse that such a ban would cripple the humanitarian effort going into the hot zone as well as going out - which we all know is not true. I wouldn't put it past this admin to refuse to ban flights out of the hot zone until full Ebola focused deployment is complete.

When an op is above and beyond the normal expectation for a soldier, drafted or not, but otherwise necessary volunteers are called for rather than troops ordered. Hasn’t this been done many times in out history?
We have an entire division of bio and chem warfare troops trained to deal with this stuff. Those are not the troops Obola is sending...
