E. Pluribus Conservatibus
The Weekly Standard ^ | 10/20/2014 | Bill Kristol

It's a daunting moment for conservatives. To have even a chance for a semblance of a conservative future in the United States, we probably need (1) to elect a GOP Congress in 2014, which (2) does well enough in the majority for the next two years to (3) allow a Republican to win the White House in 2016, who will then (4) have to restore our military strength and morale while (5) dealing urgently with serious threats abroad, in the meantime (6) repealing and replacing Obamacare, (7) moving decisively to roll back the smothering and enervating nanny state, (8) enacting an economic growth agenda that benefits Middle America, and (9) saving the Supreme Court and therewith the Constitution. Then (10) this conservative president has to get reelected in 2020.

Great essay on the diversity of opinion among conservatives and how we must eventually unite.

"There will be dismay about effort wasted fighting among ourselves, and laments about circular firing squads, and exasperation that everyone isn’t marching to the beat of the same drummer. But in today’s conservative movement there’s no drum major.

And there shouldn’t be. No one faction will have it all right. The establishment will overvalue going along to get along, and insurgents will overly cherish fighting for fighting’s sake."

Unfortunately the GOP is full of liberals who will do all in their power to sabotage the “conservative future”

Republicans had the House and Senate in 2000 and George W Bush (the “compassionate conservative”) in the White House... they had their opportunity to do all the things they had been promising the base for years. And W’s first major act was to invite Ted Kennedy over to help him draft No Child Left Behind!

Both parties are all about expanding and protecting their power - nothing more, nothing less!

Both parties are self serving, without a doubt.

But what is scary is the shift in the “everyman” in this country.

So if GOP is full of liberals where have all the conservatives gone? Have they joined democrats? If they are just hibernating, how is that a fruitful strategy? That strategy will only place more people like Obummer in power and appoint SCOTUS justices which will turn this country into a hard left swamp.

George W Bush protected nothing. In 20-20 hindsight he was not very intelligent. He destroyed the economy by starting a totally unnecessary war. And he gave us Obama. Just like Carter gave us Reagan. When I voted for him, twice, I expected better performance from him. He disappointed me.

They aren’t “full of liberals” it is run by liberals who depend on conservatives for funding and votes and to shut up

jmho...but I think a lot of the conservatives have left this earth and will continue to do so.

The younger people, with some exceptions, are far more liberal.

That is what they are taught. Not at home...but in public school, on tv and in the movies. That is what they listen to. Bill Mahr and Jon Stewart are their source of information.

There is a lot of truth on what you said.

What you are saying does not make any logical sense. How do liberal republicans manage to become leaders if majority of republican voters are conservative?

Guys like McConnell and McCain keep winning primaries over more conservative opponents. Which can only mean there are not enough conservative voters out there to defeat the RINO’s.

I think you’re correct.
They seem more libertarian than conservative.
They also seem much more liberal on issues of morality.

ARE WE BETTER OF LOSING THE SENATE IN 2014?

If the GOPs RINOcrats win, the GOPe will be convinced that it doesn't need the conservative base and will pass the leftist agenda, including Obama's nominations.

Don't believe me? Even now the Republican leadership is lowering expectations about what they'll do if they take the Senate in 2014.

You worried about a Democrat Senate approving Obama's judicial nominees? Well maybe you should listen to John McCain saying what will happen if the Republicans win the Senate: “I will work very hard to go back to 60 votes,” said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who boldly predicts a Republican Senate would process Obama’s nominees “more rapidly than [Democrats] do today.”

And as for the House: John Boehner: ‘Very Few’ Republicans Will Oppose Me

So tell me again how much better off we'll be voting for the RINOs.

If it wins the Senate, the current Republican leadership and RINOcrat candidates will do nothing to save our nation (assuming it is still capable of being saved), and the anger of the electorate will be aimed at them in 2016, as Hillary comes in and promises to save us.

And she will probably win, unless the GOP valiantly articulates, expresses and supports conservative candidates and the conservative agenda and has a credible conservative firebrand -- preferably Ted Cruz -- running against her.

If, on the other hand, the GOPe RINOcrats lose the 2014 general election, they will be forced to move immediately to the so-called "Right," and their their proven-loser moderate mainstream candidates (Romney, Christie, Bush, Huckabee) will never get past the primaries in 2016.

And Karl Rove will be a distant memory.

So which is better, if we win the Senate now or lose it?

Honestly, long term, I think it's better that we lose it this time.

Incrementalism isn’t necessarily a bad thing when it’s incrementing preferably.

The time for an anti progressive incrementalism was 20 or 30 years ago. The water is coming over the gunwales now. Incremental bailing at this point accomplishes the same goals as Zero has now. IMHO.

"Unfortunately the GOP is full of liberals"

Darn right. We should start by getting rid of all the ones who voted for Obamacare. Then we should make sure that no liberal Republicans ever win elections again. That'll show 'em. (Then we should shoot our own feet).

"Repealing and replacing Obamacare."

No, no, no, no!

Repeal? Yes. Replace? Then you've accomplished nothing.

Good Lord. We have an honest-to-God liberal-Republican cheerleader here.

How the hell did you last on FR so long?

The best way to accomplish all this is to bludgeon the base back into the back of the bus where it belongs.

We’re racists, out of touch socons and radicals who are despised by our betters.

Oh, by the way, they are also entitled to our votes. Just ask them.

They crossed the Rubicon. If they don’t run conservatives, they can find their votes somewhere else.
