Republican Iowa state Sen. Joni Ernst has pulled ahead of Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley in a race for the U.S. Senate that had been considered virtually deadlocked for months, a new poll released Saturday by The Des Moines Register shows.
Ernst leads 44 percent to 38 percent in the race that is considered pivotal to the GOP's effort to retake the Senate on Nov. 4, the Register reports. Twelve percent of the 546 likely voters surveyed Sept. 21-24 said they were undecided.
Vote Now: Do You Approve Or Disapprove of President Obama's Job Performance? "Very interesting, and good news not just for Ernst but also for the GOP's chances of taking the U.S. Senate," Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, told the Register.
Ernst and Braley are battling to succeed Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, who is retiring after 30 years in Congress. Just seven months ago, political analysts virtually anointed Braley as Harkin's successor, the Register reports.
But the latest survey found that Ernst is ahead nearly 4-1 with rural voters, and is up double digits with independent voters.
"I think he has an attitude about the voters and life in general, which was indicated by what he said about Chuck Grassley," Dianna Fuhrmeister, a registered Democrat who now is an independent, told the Register. "He thinks he knows better than us."!

This is similar to another poll taken about a week ago. It’s looking promising.
It’ll soon be 10+.
Very promising!
Whoever did her commercials, I hope they find work in the 2016 presidential contest
‘Bout damn time the Iowans woke up....
The Grassley remark killed him. It was his 47% flub.
I saw a clip where Brasley said that Ernst would have to pay back the Koch brothers if elected. Why not fire back that he’d have to pay back George Soros, Hollywood, higher education, etc.? Fight fire with fire.
The poll I want to see is the one on election day, with a Republican Senate (OK, not as conservative as I’d like) and House.
Yea but what’s not obvious is that there is a huge pool of undecided. We need to pick up better than 2% for every 3% they pick up. Which makes the race deceptively close and the actual figures are being played up by somebody.
I live in Davenport and get 3-4 emails a day from the National Republican Senatorial Committee. I delete them.
Whenever a Bruce Braley ad comes on to say that Joanie is in the pocket of the Koch Bothers and “Big Oil,” I send a check to the Ernst campaign.
Keep it up Bruce. Joanie is going to kick your ass.
Well when it comes to Democrats it doesn’t have to be true - Obama based a big portion of his campaign implying Mitt Romney wanted to ban all birth control.
Yes - that really was detrimental in multiple ways. First of all, it was an elitist remark that people who hold “law degrees” are somehow better than everyone else. The remark also insulted farmers in general. And lastly, it certainly doesn’t create a positive effect for your campaign to comment that you need to be elected so you can prevent your state’s other Senator from obtaining a powerful committee chairmanship.
I'll believe it once I see it in the election night results.
Until then, I'm thinking it's meant to lull us into complacency and staying home.
I can feel your pessimism. :-)
