I’ll be planting some lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, turnips and other cool weather veggies. I have some shallots that I didn’t dig last spring and they are already six inches tall. They come back year after year.

We’ve flirted with low 40s a few nights so far. While we are having a stretch of slightly above average days, it’s definitely early for Indian Summer. Mrs. Henkster thinks we’re not in Indian Summer yet. Normally Indian Summer ends around my birthday in mid-October, but I think the cold weather is going to be early this year.

It was only about five years ago I was umpiring in our fall youth baseball league. That year on October 8, I was home plate umpire for a doubleheader and it was 94 degrees. I’ll bet that doesn’t happen in October in Alaska.

Boy, that is not a day easily forgotten...94 degrees in October!

Anything above 70 is HOT! Break out the fans!

Not always, but more often than not, snow is on the ground sometime in October.
