Government Scientists Try to Take the Stink Out of Pig Manure
Yahoo! News ^ | 9/18/14 | Mark Peters - WSJ

PEORIA, Ill.— Terry Whitehead's lab here is stocked with glass boiling flasks, Bunsen burners—and cans of extra-strength air freshener.

The microbiologist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture works with pig manure in a quest for something that has largely eluded scientists and entrepreneurs: an affordable way to clear the air in farm country.

In a region where hogs can outnumber people, Mr. Whitehead's research is the ultimate icebreaker.

"First, you say, 'I work with manure,' and they say, 'What?' Then you say, 'Odor,' and they say, 'Thank God,' " says the lanky 57-year-old, who recently attended the North American Manure Expo in Missouri. ("It would be a real waste" to miss it, the event website says.)

Cattle trucks? I risk speeding fines to make sure that I stay in front of them.

Simple solution, if you have a problem with the odor of animal farms don’t move next to one and then complain about it!

The easy answer to this is bacteria. They can eat so much and so fast it could radically reduce the stench.

Ever smelled a pogy fish mill in Louisiana?

You’d be happy to stick your head up a pigs butt to get away from that.

It will be borderline impossible to get the STINK out of the White Hut when those two wookie infiltrators are dragged out kicking and screaming.

It's amazing how wholesome and delicious pork usually tastes, given how extraordinarily bad pig manure smells.

Get behind a semi loaded with slaughter house offal (usually covered by a tarp)and the stench is nauseating.

Well this didn’t seem to be an offal truck. It was like a normal semi trailer, except covered with louvers. Too much wind noise to tell if there was any mooing going on.

How does it rate next to a good old fashioned 1960's era paper mill?

Cause we actually rolled the windows DOWN when we drove past it, in case one of us kids blew cookies...

I live about three miles from a hog “factory farm”.

Most of the time, no problem. But if the wind is precisely WNW by N—big problem. Pig problem. Don’t even think of opening a window.

Farm agent Hank Kimball noticed that farmer Ziffell was slopping hogs under his dwelling, and other hogs were snoozing under the old man’s shack.
He asked the farmer if he thought the practice was sanitary.
Ziffell replied, “I ain’t lost a hog yet.”
“And Mr. Douglas helped me adopt this pig, and now Arnold’s my heir.”

One or two decades ago, Japanese scientists came up with a pill so women could remove the odour; women who took the pill could actually say “My s**t does not stink!”

Right now they will eat most any sort of slop. Turning garbage into ham, that isn’t too bad a trade, even with the stink.

My wife was one of nine kids whose father was a sharecropper in NE Arkansas. The hogs they raised would eat anything and the family had to constantly take measures to keep them from getting into the coal bin and eating coal.

I’ve read that hog farms are also excellent for disposal of human bodies. ...Hoffa comes to mind.

Paper mill was perfume compared to pogy fish mill.

Smells like rotting fish.

Most were located a mile or 2 from the road and they would still gag you when you drove by.
