SCOTLAND SAYS NO! But clear poll result triggers a constitutional earthquake
The Daily Mail ^ | 19 September 2014 | Matt Chorley

Alex Salmond today admitted defeat in his battle for Scottish independence, as almost two million people voted to remain in the United Kingdom.

On the worst day of his political life, the First Minister tried to put a brave face on the electorate’s crushing verdict, claiming that it showed only that a majority had decided ‘at this stage’ not to become an independent country.

But with all councils declared, No had secured 55 per cent of the vote, a 10-point lead which will trigger speculation about whether Mr Salmond can survive as leader of the Scottish Nationalists.

The Queen has been ‘closely’ monitoring the outcome of the vote, and is expected to issue a public statement welcoming the survival of the 307-year Union later today.

I see Dundee was the most heavily pro-yes constituency. That’s where my grandfather was from.

Despite a healthy 45% of the vote they only carried 3 of 32 “council areas”, including Glasgow.

Shades of Abe Lincoln’s victory over McClellan, McC got 45% of the vote but only 3 states.

The one Tory MP is from down by the border

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumfriesshire,_Clydesdale_and_Tweeddale_(UK_Parliament_constituency)

And the only other seat they’ve held since Blair is next door to that one.

They used to have disproportionally more seats than England, that was ended after they got their Scottish Parliament back.

The Tories 3 constituency MSPs (there others elected proportionally under the Additional Member” System”) in Scottish Parliament are also from down south. They had 1 more, in a historically conservative part of Edinburgh, but lost it in the last election.

"Certain Freepers will tell you that our federal government would send the full force of our military against any U.S. state that did the same thing.

It's nuts, I know, but such is the depth of paranoia around here."

Not like the Federal Government hasn't done it before. That little misunderstanding from 1861 to 1865...

This ain't 1861 my friend. Americans, nor their government, are about to go to war and kill thousands of their fellow countrymen (and relatives) over a purely political act like secession.

Are you kidding me? The left would rejoice if Texas chose to leave the union.
