I don’t know the lay of the land over there, so I’m wondering how the big cities are going. Small ones usually come in first (at least over here) and sometimes the big cities change the direction in a hurry.

What’s your take on that dynamic?

That’s easy to answer. The full name of the Conservative Party is something like the Conservative Unionist Party, born out of the Irish independence debacle.

Tories are, regardless of politics, against the breaking up of the union or ceding of territory. David Cameron, a Conservative Party prime minister, does not want to preside over the dissolving of the UK. His name would be mud in the history books forever.

In addition, he offered the referendum to Scotland no doubt assuring his backbenchers there was no chance they would vote Yes. If they do, he will be ousted.

If its not popular in the small towns and countryside, its not going to happen when Edinburgh and Glasgow come in later.

You’d think rural folk would be gung-ho for independence. We’re not seeing it here.

I’ve got to think among the people, a lot of the people are just connected to both sides, Scotland and England. That’s got to have a big effect, cousins, wives and so on.

Everyone is talking about counties but aren’t there really just 2 cities to watch?

Edinburgh and Glasgow I think are the names, aren’t they pretty much going to decide any real national vote?

Glasgow is going to pretty close to 50/50. No up about 150k votes. Not enough votes in Edinburgh to make a difference.

This wasn’t the night Alex Salmond wanted to see.

Scots are voting to remain in the UK.

I have mixed emotions about this election. An independent Scotland would not be helpful to the United Kingdom, nor, in my opinion, would it be helpful to Scotland, except perhaps to save money in social services for the UK and taxes for Scotland. Also it's a bit disconcerting that teenagers younger than 18 are eligible to vote.

On the other hand, my guess is that my Welsh, Norwegian and (one?) Irish ancestors would likely applaud Scotland's attempt to separate from the UK.

Scotland will get more powers and money from London. For a shakedown, its paying off quite handsomely.

Now that does indeed ring some realpolitik bells.
