Ian Paisley: from Northern Irish ayatollah to Chuckle Brother
theguardian.com ^ | 12 September 2014 | Henry McDonald

During his long career both in parliaments and on pulpits, Ian Paisley was compared to Ayatollah Khomeini, a second-rate Calvin who tried to turn Ulster into a 17th-century Geneva and, latterly, one of the Chuckle Brothers from the BBC children's comedy show.

The last nickname came about during his years in office as Northern Ireland's first minister, when Paisley stunned friends and foes alike by forming a double-act in government with the former IRA chief of staff Martin McGuinness.

Islam and “Romanism.” Or why freepers sometimes scare me. Some of you people have really gone over to the dark side. Paisley encouraged the murder of Catholics, don’t you remember that? Or were you in diapers in the 1960?

Hi, Trisham! Unfortunately, there is evil on both sides of the “Irish problem.” I, personally, after following it for 3 decades, wash my hands of both sides. Creeps, all!

Had an older gent in NI that told me....”Don’t ever believe “The Troubles” are over, no matter what they say.”

I heard after 9/11 the fund dried up significantly.

I’m glad that they are at peace today. Somewhere a child is growing up straight and strong, perhaps, as Shane said. But I don’t believe for a second this is over. I just hope when the evil breaks out I’m long gone!!!

it did indeed. Bush clamped down on it, and he was no where as friendly to Adams and co like Clinton and the Kennedys were.

Hope you and your family are doing well Rush

Fine that he had testosterone; the problem is he was needlessly divisive between Protestants and Catholics and missed no chance to try to oppress the latter.

Imho, the English should get out of Ireland entirely. Ireland and “Northern Ireland” should be one country.

I don’t see that happening any time soon. This must be England’s original sin. Something they should focus on rather than worrying about American racism - as their newspapers always do!

I haven’t gone to any dark side. I’m a Christian.

As for Dr. Paisley encouraging murder of Catholics, where’s your evidence? Bold truthtellers often have enemies who think nothing of lying about them. That said, if he actually encouraged literal murder, that would have been wrong, just as Rome’s many murders over the centuries were wrong.

No tears falling in this Irish Catholic household. He lived 88 years too long to suit my Fenian blood.

The early life of Ian Paisley was littered with such stuff, but in the end the Marxist-Leninists of Sinn Fein-IRA were his “Catholic” political adversaries.

Gerry Adams and Martin McGuiness are the Che and Fidel of Ireland. Adams spoke in Dublin a few days after 9/11 saying it was a “setback for progressive movements around the world.”

They couldn’t do terrorism anymore so they cut a deal with Paisley, who wouldn’t compromise on union with Great Britain, but described his Democratic Unionist Party as “left of center” otherwise.

The DUP subsidized fishermen and provided the lowest cost free housing in communities in NI where they controlled the government.

He created paramilitary groups that patrolled Catholic sections of Belfast. Paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland are not in existence to organize church picnics. The IRA is a paramilitary organization. I doubt you think they were innocents.

That’s not evidence of encouraging murder. Defending your homeland from tyranny and terrorists isn’t the same as encouraging murder.
