OPINION

Harry Reid is mad that Republicans didn't obstruct his bill

BY ASHE SCHOW | SEPTEMBER 9, 2014 | 10:57 AM

After all his complaints about Republican obstruction this year, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid expressed frustration last night after Republicans helped guarantee a floor vote on a measure he supports.

The Nevada Democrat has accused Senate Republicans of chicanery for voting to advance to the Senate floor a Democratic constitutional amendment allowing Congress to regulate all campaign speech and spending.

After Monday's bipartisan 79-18 vote, Reid vented to reporters that Republicans were trying to "stall" the Senate, indicating that he never intended for the campaign finance amendment by Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., to go to a real floor debate.

Politico reporter Burgess Everett writes that many Republicans voted to advance the amendment Monday in order “to foul up Democrats’ pre-election messaging schedule, freezing precious Senate floor time for a measure that ultimately has no chance of securing the two-thirds support necessary in both the House and Senate to amend the Constitution.”

The move not only guarantees a lengthy debate over Democratic efforts to limit the First Amendment, but it also limits the amount of time left for debates over other doomed measures on gender pay equality and the minimum wage, which were intended to frame the coming elections for Democrats as they defend their Senate majority.

Republicans don’t want people revealing the truth about their shady deals any more than do the democrats.

Republicans and democrats squabble over who gets to slop at the public trough first.

Other than that, the main difference between them is who they want to enrichen with taxpayer money.

We live in an age where principles mean nothing.

We've been killing our own unborn citizens for 41 years; so it should be NO surprise that our country is screwed up!

I guess no one noticed that the GOP is just as quick and happy to curtail the First Amendment as the MarxoFascist Democrats are. It’s not just Reid that commits treason. But the majority of the Republican Party as well.

Of course, not one word of that is factual.

Like I said before - I hope you realize you aren't fooling anyone.

Udall, huh? Up for easy re-election by the low-information welfare loving voters of New Mexico.

Yeah. I can believe it.

DemonRATS believe that free speech is pornography, public sex acts, you know, stuff like that there.

To a DemonRAT, political speech is not protected, unless it’s politically correct speech.

It’s things like that that can make a simple, face-value interpretation of a vote meaningless or worse.
Instead of debating a “living wage” for teenage hamburger flippers, let them debate the meaning of the First Amendment!

They should all be saying Harry Reid wants to take away the 1st Amendment for those with which he disagrees.

Reminds me of this joke:

An old joke, recounted in ‘’The Big Book of Jewish Humor , involves a merchant seeing his rival getting off a train, and asking him where he’s just come from. “From Minsk,” the rival replies. “Aha!” cries the first; “you are just saying that because you want me to believe that you have really just come from Pinsk! But I already knew that you really have just come from Minsk. So why are you lying to me?”

RE:”They should all be saying Harry Reid wants to take away the 1st Amendment for those with which he disagrees.”

From the above it looks like that's the plan.
Let Reid tie up the Senate with this going no-where amendment, debate it endlessly on Senate floor.

From some reactions here someone would think that this has some chance of passing/getting to ratification.

HAHA,you just cant make Reid happy.

Reminds me of 2004 when the Democrats tried to sell the lie to young voters that Bush was trying to bring back the draft (for Iraq). The only proposals in the House and Senate were exclusively authored by Democrats. When the Republicans forced them to a vote, the Rats voted down their own bill.

I recall that. Didn't Murtha and then Charles Rangle talking as ex-soldiers get on Sunday TV shows and say we need a draft (the purpose was to make Iraq very unpopular) , and then step away and the media story they sparked was ‘Government thinking of reviving draft’ as if Bush came up with that. Obviously that idea was toxic.

Grahamnesty came up with the same scam a year or two ago suggesting on Sunday show that *maybe* we need to remove or modify birthright citizenship in the constitution, creating false story that the GOP was planning to try that (Nore : the constitution doesn't require that being changed but Grahmnesty wanted to get the message across that its the constitution making illegals kids legal citizens.

Just trying to stir up trouble,
