Getting savaged in the comments section. Several people pointed out that if you intend to surrender to the invader, dousing them with wasp spray first was probably not the most prudent plan of action. Most stated that a firearm is a far better solution.

I have only this to add: a home invader is, by the very nature of his crime, a violent and dangerous criminal. Shoot him. Shoot him twice. You might as well, you're going to have to clean the gun anyway.

Actually that's not correct. Those are just the tools. What I really protect my family with is intelligence and determination. I am smart enough and realistic enough to realize there is evil in this world, that there are bad people in this world who would harm me and my family for no good reason. Finally, determination means I have steeled myself to the reality that it may be necessary to commit acts of violence against anyone in order to protect my family.

Better advice is:
#1: get a medium to large sized dog
#2: firearm, ammo, and bulletproof vest
#3: bear spray and caltrops
#4: wait for the intruder to come to you across a field of caltrops, then unleash the dog, apply ammo per instructions on box, and fog the house with bear spray as you leave to wait outside for the police to finally arrive.
