Russian Strategic Bombers Near Canada Practice Cruise Missile Strikes on US

Two Russian strategic bombers conducted practice cruise missile attacks on the United States during a training mission last week that defense officials say appeared timed to the NATO summit in Wales.

The Russian Tu-95 Bear bombers were tracked flying a route across the northern Atlantic near Iceland, Greenland, and Canada’s northeast.

Analysis of the flight indicated the aircraft were conducting practice runs to a pre-determined “launch box”—an optimum point for firing nuclear-armed cruise missiles at U.S. targets, said defense officials familiar with intelligence reports.

Disclosure of the nuclear bombing practice comes as a Russian general last week called for Moscow to change its doctrine to include preemptive nuclear strikes on the United States and NATO.

Gen. Yuri Yakubov, a senior Defense Ministry official, was quoted by the state-run Interfax news agency as saying that Russia’s 2010 military doctrine should be revised to identify the United States and the NATO alliance as enemies, and clearly outline the conditions for a preemptive nuclear strike against them.

I wonder why things have escalated to this level? Because of Ukraine?

The Russians were doing this long before Ukraine. Ultimately, Putin is looking to reconstitute the Soviet empire (including the Warsaw Pact) and perhaps expand beyond that). I don't think he's motivated by money. It's like mountain-climbing - people climb them for the thrill of it. The Russians are a lot like the pre-war Germans - they feel they weren't truly defeated and want a rematch. While it would be nice if Russia turned its attentions to China, and they wiped each other out, the unfortunate reality is that Russian animosity is mainly directed at the West, which outlasted the Soviet empire.

Looks like Obama has really encouraged the Russians to go back to the bad old days of the Cold War.

For a reminder of what we were all so worried about back then, an oldie but goodie from 1983, ‘The Last Broadcast”. A radio report of the development of a all out nuclear war

The Russian behavior is really nothing new...

Actually it is new...and a direct result of Western meddling in their backyard.

Weakness invites aggression. Its a dangerous situation when your adversaries see you lacking in fortitude.

From Putin’s perspective, he see’s a big green light to do whatever he wants and he’s probably correct. For him, its game on. I think its fair to say that if Reagan was president, Puting would be far more accomodating and less aggressive than he currently is.

I think you're right. If I were Putin all I'd see from bammy is weakness, ineptitude, and indecision. I believe Putin no-longer worries about the US or what bammy may or may not do. I think Putin is now making moves to impress and/or strike fear into other countries. We are a non-factor to him. For now. What's the countdown to 1/20/17 at ???

We know the US as we know it will end sometime (perhaps soon).
And we've been speculating how (massive economic crash, EMP from anonymous, Super-caldera eruption, etc) - maybe it's as simple as we lose a war with Russia.

Sometimes we fail to recognize the most obvious things.
Maybe we come out on the very short end of a limited nuclear exchnage with Russia - Obozo surrenders the US after a short volley.
Couldn't happen?

The first U-boat sunk by the US was March 1, 1942 , by a Hudson Bomber. Another was sunk on March 15, again by a Hudson. The USS Roper managed to get one April 14th.

All well after war was declared.

On or around Sept 11th, 1941, FDR ordered Americans ships to attack German U-boats on sight. Nazi submarines' "very presence in any waters which America deems vital to its defense constitutes an attack. In the waters which we deem necessary for our defense, American naval vessels and American planes will no longer wait until Axis submarines lurking under the water, or Axis raiders on the surface of the sea, strike their deadly blow—first."

There had been multiple incidents before this where US and German vessels had fired on each other, and in which US vessels had assisted British vessels in sinking German Uboats.

I wonder if we would even respond to a Russian nuclear attack. This dithering, worthless president and his incompetent aids put the nation and world in danger.

Who's "We"? For example, it's difficult to talk about Egypt in the context of "We".. "We" supported Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood and ousted Mubarak in Egypt. This is NOT the "We" citizens of the United States. This is the "We" in DC that did this, the effing IDIOTS they are.

So, "We citizens" are far more ready than "We" in DC. I am not reassured "We" in DC are ready for anything, let alone another Benghazi.
