Gay group to march in NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade

Organizers of the world's largest St. Patrick's Day Parade say they're ending a ban and allowing a gay group to march under its own banner for the first time.

The prohibition on identified gay groups in the centuries-old New York parade had made participation a political issue. Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio refused to march this year, and Guinness beer dropped its sponsorship.

Parade rules: In honor of St. Patrick, anything that looks like a snake gets it’s head cut off.

There has been a LGBTQ St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Queens for many years. The locals call it, “Erin Go Braless.”

Miss Marmelstein, I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure it’s not the Knights of Columbus who run the parade (I think they DO run the Columbus Day parade), but the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

This is very disturbing news — especially since, according to the article, Timothy Cardinal Dolan is “very supportive” of the change.

Regards,

You may be right, thanks for the correction. So, the gladhanding, fake friendly, snapping-fingers-at-flunkies-in private Cardinal supports this, eh?

My ancestors are in St. Johns! I’ll be there one day, lol.

According to Fox News, Cardinal Dolan is “very supportive.” In other news, Cardinal Dolan is still contemplating closing Holy Innocents, the ONLY church with a daily TLM.

*sigh*

The parade is not organized by the Knights of Columbus but by the Ancient Order of Hibernians (I think, but I know its not the K of C)

The Knights are moving away from the halls and going back to Parishes. The Hibos are a bar.

The Knights? Do you mean the Knights of Columbus?

I thought the St. Patrick's Day parade was organized by the Ancient Order of Hibernia.

They should change St. Patrick’s Day to Behave like a Fool and Vomit Day. That is all it has ever been in NYC.

Trouser snakes must be kept trousered!

The Ancient Order of Hibernians isn’t mentioned in the story and they are the holder of the permit, and organizer whos rules would have to be changed.

I think trying to bypass them means 2 separate parades.

Until very recently, I believe, all pubs in Ireland were closed on St. Patrick’s Day.

“It’s about a Catholic saint”

Could not be more wrong. It has become about drunkenness. Public drunkenness to boot. Kinda late to bemoan the coming of immorality.

Too late to bemoan immorality? It's not as if it's something new. It's original sin. That's why we have parades in honor of Catholic saints. To keep reality (that is, God) before us—even while some of the brethren are retching over there into the storm drains. But I don't know if you've been to NYC's parade lately. You'd be hard-pressed to find public drunkenness. The Paddies will grab you right quick for having an open container.

The distinction here is that you don't let buggers use the occasion to advertise their perversion, any more than you'd let drunks carry a banner promoting drunkenness. (Maybe it's just as well Guinness is out of it.)

Are you saying your sensibility is too delicate to preach to fallen man?

No, the AOH isn’t mentioned in the story. I thought that was odd, too. They only mention “the parade committee,” so I looked it up on the Irish Central website. This site has a timeline describing the gay marcher controversy.

According to them, in 1993, NYC gave the parade permit to the parade committee and NOT the AOH itself. A federal judge declared this act unconstitutional, and the AOH was allowed to bar the gays from marching under their own banner. Shortly thereafter, though, the AOH handed over control of the parade to an independent parade committee.

Soooo...it looks like the AOH no longer has control of the parade. I think. The timeline is a bit confusing. Here is the link, though, in case you want to take a look for yourself: http://www.irishcentral.com/news/politics/Timeline-of-the-NYC-St-Patricks-Day-Parades-LGBT-controversy-PHOTO—VIDEO.html

You’re right that public drunkenness has been cracked down for years now. The Jersey fools still muck up the commuter trains and then spend the day vomiting in the bathrooms of Penn Station but rarely do you see open containers on 5th Avenue or beyond.
