Seeds are cheap. If they have a yard, they can have a garden. If not, containers are cheap. There are ways around it, particularly for those who are on welfare, since they have time. It takes work, but it is not that difficult.
When the SHTF, poor people will be eating the rich people.
“You want good healthy food thats cheap? Go to the supermarket and buy fresh produce, fresh ingredients and learn to cook.”
Exactly.
And notice how they throw red meat and processed meats into the same category? Simple fact is that there have never been clinical trials on these issues, and the observational studies are always very careful not to ask the questions that matter - like is real food healthier than the processed industrial crap that is making so many people so much money.
Poor people only eat worse due to stupidity. The same price they pay for garbage at fast food and at grocery stores buys better food at the same places. They are poor due to the choices they make and their food choices are no better.
Ya can’t fix stupid.
I am entitled to lobster and foie gras!
Not if you know how to cook.....cooking skills have been lost on a generation of girls were traditionally these skills have been passed down...
High protein, quality meals can be easily prepared with a little skill....
Most of the current parent generation think Hamburger Helper is home cooking.....
At the same time, the people whining about food cost stop daily at Starbucks to get their $5 latte....pure crap...
I work with seeds all the time - that takes a little education, you know, and failure rate is quite high. Not all of us are children of Mr. Greenjeans. It took me years to get a decent vegetable out of a seed. Then you have to match the vegetable with the soil - that takes a bit of an outlay of cash and at least a peek into a gardening book. Then a crazy storm or a drought wrecks the entire crop.
Why can’t freepers just understand that food prices are way too high? Look at the out-of-control beef and poultry prices! And as a foodie, why did Gourmet Magazine fail? Why is Bon Appetit on the ropes? Could it be that the middle class is faltering and cutting out these fru-fru items because they can’t afford to buy the ingrediants for the recipes?
“When the SHTF, poor people will be eating the rich people.”
No way. Poor people make bad choices and will make the same types of bad choices that gets them killed if SHTF.
Take away potato chips from the “base” and Ferguson will look like a Sunday School picnic.
No, healthy food is expensive, Im sorry, it just is. I buy healthy and I have the grocery bills to prove it.

Wrong. If you could - I’d love to see a comparison of your grocery bills matched up against the average EBT shopper.
You will win on every count. Healthier, cheaper, more food, better tasting, more nutritious, etc. etc.
Not long ago someone from FR posted on Facebook about boycotting Starbucks for some political BS they were engaging in.
My answer was that my IQ was far too high (anything above 70) to pay 5 bucks for a cup of coffee so it would be impossible for me to boycott them being I could never buy anything there in the first place.
A simple solution would be limiting what can be bought with SNAP / EBT cards the way WIC is limited. For example, you get rice, beans, baby formula, fresh fruits and vegetables - but no Little Debby, no energy drinks, no soda.
You solve the obesity problem for most poor people by cutting out empty calories, without limiting the freedom of those who support themselves.
And a lot of people would start going to work and earning money if they can’t otherwise get the junk food or addictions satisfied.
people don’t have time to cook, they are too busy working to keep the electric and gas on
I have no idea what EBT grocery bills are like - I only know my own. So, beef prices are normal? Chicken prices? And where is the lamb? I’m a fan of lamb and where I am it is disappearing. And when I get a chop, it’s outrageous. Green vegetables in particular seem to be expensive - maybe because they’re so good for you, I don’t know. Potatoes are cheap, I suppose, as are sweet potatoes, thank God. Here, this summer, corn was selling for 70 cents each. I will not buy corn shipped in from states 1000 miles away so I didn’t buy much this year.
We had some trouble with this for the last 12 months. I thank God every day that things are changing for the better. When my gas caught (you know when it sometimes doesn’t come on immediately?) I panicked beyond belief. The sense of relief that flooded me when it came on was not to be believed. I will never, ever forget the generosity of these various companies who refused to cut us off when we telephoned them. God bless them! We have now paid them down. What a winter!
“Work”!!!! That’s degrading and racist expecting people to work.
From my experience it is always the fattest people at the grocery store that pay with food stamps. It has to take a lot of money to get as overweight as some of them.
Well .DUUUUHHH!!!!
Perhaps people are eating less healthy food because they just taste better.
