Nutritional disparities between Americas rich and poor are growing, despite efforts to provide higher-quality food to people who most need it. So says a large study just released from the Harvard School of Public Health that examined eating habits of 29,124 Americans over the past decade. Diet quality has improved among people of high socioeconomic status but deteriorated among those at the other end of the spectrum. The gap between the two groups doubled between 2000 and 2010. That will be costly for everyone.
The primary conclusion of the study is interesting, though, in that its focus is diet quality among the population as a whole. Without accounting for socioeconomic status, there has been, the study reads, steady improvement. People arent eating more vegetables, or less red or processed meat, and their salt intake increasedwhich the researchers call disconcertingbut Americans are eating more good things like whole fruit, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and polyunsaturated fats.
Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard and one of the studys authors, led with the good news when we spoke by phone.

OMG! Don't these people have more than several presidential terms to write more than enough about than to wrack their puny, brain-addled skulls with stories about the poor poor, poor eating habits.
Do you have any idea what you can buy with those previous food stamped, now magic-manna cash cards??
The quality of food?? How most of the nation now lives off these cards and all the fraud that goes along with it? And now the MSM, being totally bereft of anything to whine and cringe and get all righteous indignant about (ISIS?? Who Them??) Crying about the widening food gap??? So why the heck don't you put the blame on an ever diminishing economy, ever sinking quality of life that leads to the very circumstances you are lamenting where it BELONGS, you mongrel-news pieces of crap???
Trying to eat healthy is really expensive.
How about Michelle forfeiting some of her burgers and fries to improve the situation. That should take care of at least a dozen people.
[ Trying to eat healthy is really expensive. ]
So if we put MORE money on the EBT cards these people will eat better?
When I see a story like this I wonder why Moochelle the food crusader hasn’t put an end to using EBT cards for junk food and manufactured snacks.
Yeah, there’s no upper limitations on the “quality of food” that you CAN buy with foodstamps,
and due to that program, lack of wealth is NOT the problem with buying poor quality food.
These people have all the resources necessary, if they so chose, to buy good food, but they choose not to.
he that doesn’t work, neither shall he eat
Won’t happen, because their “base” wouldn’t stand for it.
I won’t argue with you there. But there’s still more than enough of healthy cheap food available.
This is all a push to increase the balances on all the EBT cards out there....
But the people using the EBT are so addicted to the cheap garbage food that they will just buy more of it and more reports will say they need more money for expensive healthy food...
Round and round it goes...
Don’t forget the mineshaft gap! Rich people have much more lavish mineshafts than poor people. In fact, most poor peoples’ mineshafts are in high crime areas or even under overpasses. Shameful, that there is a mineshaft gap in the world’s richest nation!
but the rich people are underfed and the poor people are overfed
he that doesn’t work, shall play golf.

Nope. Quite untrue.
These “poor people” somehow manage to have beer, lottery and cigarette money. While eating fast food, junk food and all you can eat buffets.
All very expensive and very bad for you.
You want good healty food that’s cheap? Go to the supermarket and buy fresh produce, fresh ingredients and learn to cook.
Much cheaper than eating out or even eating processd crap they market as food. And very healthy.
The poor buy fast food and junk food because it’s cheap and easy. During the school year, the children are fed free breakfasts and lunches and in some cases, an after school snack, so the government provides supposedly healthy food. Goner are the days when Mama or Grandma prepared a big pot of homemade soup for pennies per serving of nutritious food.
We need to start a food stamp program that allows people to purchase nutritious food because they can't afford to waste their precious SNAP debit card on such a foolish waste.

And if the EBT and SNAP programs handed out pre-boxed “packages” containg healthy food it would be wasted or fenced for bad food/booze....
And the libs would scream bloody murder for forcing people to eat this food and the “stigma” that carrying a box of pre-packeaged food stamp food would bring to the poor down trodden...
Not really.

Isn’t it funny how the libs still market the poor in this country like extras from the movie “Oliver Twist” when the vast majority of the “poor” now look like Wal-Martians....
