Laying a Brave Officer to Rest

Well, let’s put all that aside for the moment to honor a fallen Oklahoma City police officer killed in the line of duty last week. Officer K-9 Kye responded to a burglary call with his handler, Sergeant Ryan Stark. Apparently the burglar was armed with a knife and when Officer Kye engaged him, the criminal thug stabbed officer Kye inflicting a fatal wound. Sgt. Stark responded in what I believe most of America will agree was a justifiable response and sent that cop-killer burglar to Hell with his sidearm.

To paraphrase an old Elvis song, "Kye, he has gone where the good doggies go....". Thanks Sgt. Stark for handling the matter with speed and accuracy.

It's too bad that the dog was killed, but the dog was not an officer, nor was the burglar "a cop-killer", unless he killed a human police officer, too.

Dogs are only "cops" in the fevered fantasies of the American Police State.

Seriously, are conservatives starting to confuse humans and dogs now?

Dittos. I love critters but come on. And a human casket? Oh, hell no, not on my watch!

Well, I'm a strict conservative (NOT a republican), and I think of a K-9 as a tool, useful for the furtherance of the proper discharge of the duties of those employed to protect and serve me.

Please disregard the subtle sarcasm.

However, I am not without compassion. I do not think the K-9 should be elevated to the level of "Brave Officer" or some such, but most dogs I've met that have received even a modicum of training are loyal, hardworking, personable to a degree and certainly worthy of our respect for the sacrifice they may make in the service of human beings.

Therefore, I do not confuse a cop and a dog, but I do mourn (however briefly) the loss of a well-trained and extremely useful tool.

I also understand the officers sense of loss, but refuse to elevate it to the level of comparison with the loss of a sentient human loved one.

Having said all that, I must add that I have no problem with the killer of the tool (dog) being sent to hell, since he was probably on his way with a one-way ticket, anyway.

So, there it is.

Excellent post, and I totally agree.

Including the one-way ticket.

Strictly enforced rule: only cops can kill dogs.

I thought the cop-killer burglar had a knife. Oh, he means the officer used his side arm to send the knife wielding burglar to hell.

Roger that. In this report, the K-9 is considered an officer despite what others might think/believe about that designation. The dog protected his owner/handler as trained and paid the ultimate price in so doing.

Kye was a dog, and was neither a human nor a police officer. He was probably a good dog and will be missed by his handler just as I would miss my own border collie. But he was a dog. ansel12’s lament in Post #4 is spot on. The only thing sadder than the misguided elevation of animals to human status is the mindless agreement of many otherwise sane and rational Conservatives.

And that’s the crux of it.

Good dog.

Good cop.

The killer got instant karma.

For laughs, I just picture in my mind one of you types trying to sell that basket of horse feathers to one of the Founding Fathers.

Ben Franklin would have smiled genially, shaken his head in disbelief, and gone to get both of you another pint, having jumped to the conclusion that you were drunk, and babbling...

Agreed. I love dogs, but at the same time I do not want to conflate them with humans as so many do here, even. In fact, I love German Shepherds but my opinion still stands.

OTOH, I totally understand a person’s grief over his own beloved pet being killed, vs. crying over some basically unknown person killed in a city far away (”we’re worried about a dog when so many humans are dying?”)....the personal connection has to be accounted for.
